Death Stranding has always been something of an anomaly in the gaming industry. Being Hideo Kojima's baby, it has had the opportunity to be perhaps the most bonkers example of the auteur's ability to tell stories.
The game itself isn't particularly gamey, while half-hour cutscenes contribute to the argument that it's perhaps not a game to play if you're looking for fun. Even so, fans love Death Stranding, and it has stood as a modern example of the narrative capabilities of the interactive medium. Now, it looks like the long-expected Kojima movie could be coming sooner than we think.
Is A Death Stranding Movie On The Way?
It looks like Kojima's feature-length directorial debut could be right around the corner, as according to PC Gamer, the Death Stranding movie has reportedly been fast-tracked behind the scenes at Kojima Productions.
The company has partnered with Hammerstone Studios to bring Death Stranding to life on the big screen, in a new movie that's set to bring new characters to life in the game's dense but bizarre world.
"I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios," said Kojima in a statement. "This is a pivotal moment for the franchise, and I'm really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing Death Stranding to the big screen."
The Death Stranding Movie Will Be 'Intimate And Grounded'
According to the film's producer, Alex Lebovici, the new Death Stranding movie will feel like an authentic Hideo Kojima project. "We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation," he says.
"Unlike other big budget tentpole videogame adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a videogame adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic Hideo Kojima production."
A Death Stranding movie has been rumoured for a while, and alongside reimaginings for the likes of Fallout, The Last of Us, God of War, and even Warhammer 40,000, there's been an influx of live-action adaptations. Also, with Death Stranding 2 just announced, the timing couldn't be better.
It's nice to see that the film's team is dedicated to ensuring that the first-ever movie adaptation of Kojima's works will be authentic. Here's hoping they cast Norman Reedus from Ride with Norman Reedus as Sam Porter Bridges, because they look remarkably alike.
