We've finally got some (unofficial) news on the status of the upcoming Detective Pikachu 2 game, as Nintendo teases what's going on.

Though the Detective Pikachu name might be culturally dominated by Ryan Reynolds (and rightfully so, to be honest), the game was pretty solid and criminally underrated. The adventure spin-off launched on the 3DS in 2018, and faded into an obscurity that's pretty hard to come by for the Pokemon series.

It's a shame too, as Detective Pikachu is a sweet narrative mystery that gives us an insight into a world that looks very much like our own... only with Pokemon injected into it. It was a great time, and back in 2019 we were told we'd get a sequel - and we've heard nothing since. Until now.

What Is The Detective Pikachu 2 Release Date?

Detective Pikachu 2 Release Date Gets A Long-Awaited Update

Update: Detective Pikachu 2 (now called Detective Pikachu Returns) launched on October 6, 2023.

We've got a new idea for the development of Detective Pikachu 2, and it has come straight from a member of the game's staff listing their achievements on LinkedIn (via Nintendo Life).

Creatures Inc and PTCG Development Division Programmer Jonathon Murphy has shared a new update to his work experience on the site, and has revealed that he has "using Unity/C#, worked on one unannounced project and one nearing release, Detective Pikachu 2." Interesting.

The way this is phrased as having "worked" on these games seems to indicate that Detective Pikachu 2 may be finished, or at the very least, without any more input required from Murphy. This could be a sign that the game will finally get its reveal soon, which our first bit of good news about the sequel since it was announced three years ago.

Pokemon Confirms That Detective Pikachu 2 Is On The Switch

Because we've truly moved on from the life cycle of the 3DS (we know, we're upset about it too), fans have wondered about the future of Detective Pikachu. Fear not, as Nintendo actually confirmed that the sequel would launch on the Switch when it was first revealed. "Can't wait to keep sleuthing with #DetectivePikachu?" asks the original announcement tweet. "Plans are under way to bring this crime-solving Pikachu to Nintendo Switch!"

It looks like the future of the game is safe on the Switch, and with its announcement seemingly approaching rapidly, it looks like we could be sleuthing once again in no time. Come on Pikachu, get your deerstalker hat on. All we need now is an update on that long-rumoured Detective Pikachu 2 movie
