Not long after release and it's clear Diablo 4 has been a barn-storming success. As it's first official season is peeking around the corner, there's every chance that it could be about to get even better.

The game has given players just what they've been looking for in a Diablo title, all the while giving them the chance to do it all as a lone wolf, or with a group of pals hellbent on saving Sanctuary.

But, there's a problem, as players are now realising that they're going to have to pay monthly for the privilege of playing with others.

Fans realise Diablo demands PS Plus

Though PlayStation has tried to make it clear that players won't be able to take to the online features of paid games without paying their monthly fee to PlayStation Plus, Diablo fans are finally recognising just how much of the game is pulled away from them when they're not feeding Sony their cash.

One Reddit user has shared the message that Diablo 4 issued them for not having PS Plus in the gaming subreddit, and players have rallied to complain about the fact that this is a deeply widespread issue.

"Without PlayStation Plus, you will be able to play the game but will not be able to participate in certain multiplayer activities such as Clans, PvP, chatting, forming parties, and trading with other players," reads the message issued at the game's menu.

Fans have seen the message and seethed - taking to the comments to complain about just how much of the gaming world has been kept under the thumb of multiplayer subscription services.

"I still don't understand how is this normal, that you need to pay a global subscription for multiplayer to Sony..." says one user. "When Sony isn't the one who operates the servers.…"

"We didn't fight against always online hard enough," says another, seemingly defeated by the idea that this approach to games is wide-spread, especially in new-gen consoles. A third grumbled, "I deal with it, but... I think there is something inherently wrong with that business model on the consumer side of things."

This is a pretty serious problem for many, but given the amount of DDoS attacks and wonky servers that PlayStation suffered before PS Plus tidied itself up, this is sadly the lesser of two evils. Pay up, buttercup.
