Diablo IV is littered with beefy bosses and increasingly savage enemies, kicking the notoriously difficult series up a notch.

So far, though, you've been all alone. You've not been able to cosy up to a trusted companion beside the fires of hell or share your burdens with an ally in a time of dire need.

Backup is arriving, as Mercenaries are finally making their way into Diablo IV alongside a new Co-Op end-game experience that will really test your mettle.

Diablo IV Vessel of Hatred introduces four Mercenaries to aid your quests

Diablo IV Mercenaries

As a staple of the series, Mercenaries are finally available for hire in Diablo IV and are coming as four unique companions who will be picking up arms alongside you.

These four new characters will be available for purchase, each boasting a different backstory and a list of skills personal to their own arsenal and abilities.

There are different Skill Trees, which allows them to be developed by the player in whichever need suits them most. If you need some support, tank them up with health and armour, if you need some help dealing damage to some unbeatable baddies, then give them some upgrades to their attack.

The four Diablo IV mercenaries are Raheir, a lawless brawler trained by the Iron Wolves; Varyana, a former tribal cannibal with a fascination with dark arts; Aldkin, a half-demon born of a ritualed labour; and Subo a bow-and-arrow master bounty hunte.

Mercenaries will also gain Rapport after spending time with you, which will help unlock bartering opportunities.

If you don't have the coin for a Mercenary right now, well, how about teaming with friends to take down a new end-game dungeon?

Enter the Dark Citadel, a new co-op PvE end-game experience that has players join forces to crawl through a deadly dungeon filled with brutal boss fights.

With squads of up to four players, you're tasked with defeating complex bosses with coordination while also relying on individual skill, as paths will split you up along the way.

Diablo IV is making co-op easier, too, as a new marker system is being developed to help with nonverbal communication. The Dark Citadel boasts some incredibly powerful loot caches and unique cosmetics that will make your tussle with these deities worth every scratch.
