DOOM Eternal’s mod support could finally add campaign co-op

Bethesda has confirmed that DOOM Eternal's official modding support is now live, and with the potential of adding a proper campaign co-op, it's putting the 'Eternal' in the game's name.

A mere four years after DOOM Eternal took the hellish series back to Earth with a bump, id Software is finally letting the first-person shooter live up to the 'eternal' part of its name. While many are looking ahead to DOOM: The Dark Ages in 2025, it looks like we'll have plenty of Barons of Hell to bust in the meantime.

Releasing at the height of the 2020 pandemic, DOOM Eternal made a whopping $450 million without microtransactions and proved itself more than worthy as a sequel to 2016's DOOM reboot. The two-part The Ancient Gods DLC was equally praised, but to be honest, there hasn't been much reason to head back since.

DOOM Eternal's mod support is here

Bethesda has given us a welcome surprise and confirmed that user-generated DOOM Eternal mod support is now live. According to Bethesda's Slayers Club, the DOOM Eternal Update 6.66 Rev 3 has added the option to explore mod support via Steam's beta branch.

We're told that Microsoft Store support is coming "soon," although there's no mention of a console version. Players who opt into mod support can craft their own nightmarish creations and share the mods via the idStudio Beta program. If that all feels a bit overwhelming, there are plenty of idStudio tutorials and an installation guide.

The world is our demonic oyster, and while we're sure someone's already put Shrek, GTA: San Andreas' CJ, and Thomas the Tank Engine in there, mod support teases a major possibility that could completely change our DOOM Eternal experience.

DOOM Eternal's attempt at multiplayer was one of the game's few missteps, with the maligned Battlemode being dubbed a massive step back for the series. Playing as either Doomguy or a demon, you chased each other around generic maps, while the later addition of Horde Mode was perfectly fine.

Players are already hyping the potential of a proper DOOM Eternal campaign co-op, especially after 2016's game also skipped out on a co-op campaign. It can get a little lonely out there sometimes, so diving in with pals and lighting up Pinkies with a Plasma Rifle and your pals sounds like a lot of fun.

DOOM Eternal's mod support comes just after QuakeCon announced a DOOM + DOOM II definitive edition that adds online cross-platform deathmatch, co-op game modes for up to 16 players, and mod support for the last 25 years of community-created mods. Now, let your creepy and creative juices flow.
