For years, E3 was the premier event in the games industry calendar and something the community looked forward to on an annual basis.

Without fail, the show always brought blockbuster announcements to the table, boasting talents from massive publishers across the globe.

However, E3 took a turn for the worse in 2021 when it was held digitally, then fully cancelled in 2022. Since then, the future of the event has been up in the air. Now, the Entertainment Software Association has officially announced that E3 has been shut down completely.

The Entertainment Software Association officially shutdown E3

As reported by the Washington Post, The Entertainment Software Association has scrapped the E3 event.

This news has been speculated about since the 2022 cancellation, but the announcement from the ESA is only just coming out now.

"After more than two decades of hosting an event that has served as a central showcase for the U.S. and global video game industry, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has decided to bring E3 to a close."

While sad for the wider gaming community, this was expected. More recently, publishers have started hosting their own events, giving them more control. As a result, there's no need for one big central hub where all the breaking news is announced.

What events will replace E3 in gaming?

E3 event

While E3 will not be coming back, there are already other established events that have picked up the mantle, including The Games Awards and Summer Games Fest.

Not only that, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony all have their own independent showcases to announce their front-running titles.

Despite this, nothing will match the magic of having nearly every major game revealed at a single event. While E3's time may have passed, it certainly made a made major impact on the industry as a whole.
