Much like how Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe is embracing the potential of the Multiverse, it looks like the world of video games is doing much the same. Now, Electronic Arts could be suiting up on the sidelines and assembling its own team of Avengers for not one, but two Marvel games.
Back in the day, you might remember lacklustre releases like Activision's X2: Wolverine's Revenge, THQ's The Punisher, and 2K's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. All of these came before 2008's Iron Man founded the MCU, and it's safe to say, Marvel IPs were hardly the hot property they are today. In 2022, anyone and everyone is fighting to develop a Marvel game.
Is EA Working On A Marvel Game?
Much like how Rocksteady managed to restore faith in the often abysmal dynasty of Batman games, Insomniac gave hope to Marvel games thanks to 2018's Spider-Man. Even though Insomniac seems to be ruling the roost thanks to Miles Morales and upcoming releases for Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine, that doesn't mean others can't muscle in.
Neither Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers or Eidos Montreal's Guardians of the Galaxy have managed to capture Insomniac's magic, so is it EA's time to try... again? We recently covered how a Black Panther game is reportedly in development at EA, but according to Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb, a mysterious second title is on the way. Grubb claims that the Black Panther outing will be a single-player and open-world experience where T'Challa is dead and players will "take on the challenges of becoming the new Black Panther."
Explaining where things are right now with Marvel games, Grubb explained. "I will say that I've not heard anything about Microsoft getting any of these tips." This seemingly debunks the idea that Microsoft could be getting an Xbox-exclusive Marvel game. The interesting bit came just after this when Grubb added, "Let's just to stop the speculation, the other ones at EA as well."
What Could EA's Second Game Be?
In terms of what could be on the way from EA, there's (literally) a Multiverse of options. Insomniac had Easter eggs pointing to everyone from Doctor Strange to Daredevil, and even had a nod toward Black Panther. For longer than we care to remember, gamers have been calling for a massive X-Men game, and with The Fantastic Four set to return to cinemas for the MCU, they're also overdue a redemption arc in the gaming sphere?
There were already reports of a Marvel fighting game from EA, but to be honest, we hope it's something different. Remember, this isn't the first time EA has handled Marvel games. Unfortunately, it was struck by the curse of Marvel games with the underwhelming Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. Seeing what EA did for Star Wars with Jedi: Fallen Order, we can definitely think of worse publishers to suit up in spandex.
