You wait for Battlefield news, and then it all comes along at once. While the shooter series predates Call of Duty by a year, it's sad to see that the latter has usurped its fellow wartime buddy and left it for dead in the trenches. Don't feel too bad, though - EA has grand plans for the franchise's future.
There was once a time when Battlefield and CoD battled it out to see who came out on top, but even the worst-performing titles from Activision tended to eclipse EA's offering. Still, as Battlefield vows to carve itself a new path, it could finally be coming to Nintendo consoles for the first time ever.
Better late than never for Battlefield games on the Switch 2
After 22 years of Battlefield and 17 mainline games, it's bizarre to think that Battlefield has never graced a Nintendo console. We've been through multiple generations on PlayStation and Xbox, with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 even coming to mobile, and yet, Nintendo fans have been missing out.
In his lengthy interview about the future of the franchise, Vince Zampella hinted to IGN that all of that could be about to change. When asked about Battlefield games coming to the next generation of Switch, Zampella mused, "I mean, since [Switch 2] isn't announced and it doesn't exist, I can't really comment on that,
"But I would say absolutely, Nintendo, along with Microsoft and Sony are great partners for us, are important to us on our business at EA, at Respawn, would love to see it." Although Zamella admitted, "We don't have anything to announce," he added, "But is there a world? Sure. We love them as partners. They've been great to us. I love the [Switch]."
There are several ways you can interpret this, but with the next Battlefield presumably being a new-gen juggernaut that will push the new PS5 Pro and existing Xbox Series line to their limits, this would likely count it out from the Switch 2. Despite an upgrade, we've heard the Switch successor will be similar to the PS4 and Xbox One.
However, in terms of retro classics getting a revamp, we could see some beloved Battlefield titles get a new lease of life. Zampella clearly has a soft spot for the greats of Battlefield 3 and 4, citing them as major influences for the next outing. Even though it's not the best the series has to offer, even something like Battlefield 2042 could be an option.
Importantly, Battlefield coming to the Switch 2 could once again see the series butt head with CoD. There has been plenty of chatter about Microsoft's Activision Blizzard King acquisition opening the gates of the CoDverse to the Switch, which would once again spark some healthy competition of old between these two shooter stalwarts.
