Like many other live-service game models, Apex Legends is now getting to that point in its life where there are a lot of legends all differ in their own way, and often, new players are put off by missing out on meta characters.
Newer legends, such as Conduit, Mad Maggie, and even Seer have all been known to dominate the character pool, leaving those who are returning after years of Bangalore and Bloodhound gameplay to be quite disorientated. But now, EA is looking to mix things up a bit and make the title much easier for newer players.
EA CEO aims to make Apex Legends 'more new player friendly'
Speaking in a conference, and as pointed out by VGC, EA's CEO Andrew Wilson has said that Apex Legends' main mission for 2024 is to make the battle royale title "more new player friendly."
Wilson first admitted that Apex's existing player base, and the work they have done to evolve metas and strategies to this point, is "part of [Apex's] charm", but there now needs to be another shift back to the start and begin attracting new players. "Job number one for us is, 'how do we make that a little more new player friendly?'" he added.
"You’re starting to see it with Season 20, which is really built around 'how do we drive more acquisition and more engagement'."
Apex Legends wants to shake its 'hard and competitive' label
Many other games have gotten to similar places over the years, namely Rainbow Six Seige, which also suffers from character oversaturation and a high skill level. With this shift to making Apex Legends more accessible, EA also wants the battle royale to lose its "hard and competitive" perception.
"I think sometimes we can get a reputation for being a very hard, competitive game," added Apex's Lead Battle Royale Designer Josh Mohan. "I want that to remain at its core, but I also want the game to be a large space to entice more people to come and join in."
Who knows what these changes might be? Maybe they will shift away from ability-reliant gameplay and become more about weaponry. Maybe they will make more legends available to new players. Or maybe they will be something completely different.
But if you've never tried Apex Legends before, or have been away for some time, now might be the best time for you to visit the Outlands.
