Naturally, the Souls-like genre is full of wrong'uns. The games of the likes of FromSoftware are known for being pretty mean to its players, whether it be through berating NPCs or brutal bosses that make you want to tear the hair out of your head.

The games aren't exactly forgiving, and will try to make your gaming experience a total nightmare. But bizarrely players seem to revel in it. And though there are a lot of contenders for the top spot, players have found their new least favourite NPC in Elden Ring, and hoo boy, he's a real b*stard.

Gostoc The Gatekeeper Is Elden Ring's Worst NPC

At first glance, Gostoc the Gatekeeper - the very first NPC you'll meet when you approach Stormveil Castle in Elden Ring - might seem like some regular dude. However, he's been found to be anything but. In fact, he doesn't have the player's best interests in mind at all, as he's been outed for pilfering from their corpse.

As revealed by Gostoc's wiki page, it turns out that every time the player dies in Stormveil Castle, he'll slink along and steal 30% of your hard-earned runes before returning to his spot at the front of the castle.

The cheeky devil, who has been advising you on how best to beat the castle and take down Godrick the Grafted, has actually been stealing from your corpse every single time. It turns out that every time you find him in the castle, hovering around you, it seems like he's just waiting for you to die so he can pinch your loot. But, you can get your runes back.

You Can Claim Revenge On Gostoc

Gostoc the Gatekeeper

There is actually a way to get your runes back from Gostoc before you forget about him, if you're quick enough about it. Though the fact that he's pinching your runes simply goes over the heads of many, if you're aware of it, you can actually kill him yourself and take them back - but you have to do it before you kill Godrick, when he'll come out and start stomping on his head.

If you can get the drop on him, then the runes are yours again, but if you wait too long, then they'll be gone for good. Elden Ring is rife with absolute w**kers, but Gostoc is among the worst simply for being so sly about it all. Keep an eye on him, Tarnished.
