Although dogs are supposed to be man's best friend, you'll know it's a horse in the Lands Between. As the blood continues to flow and the spells continue to be cast, FromSoftware's Elden Ring is the gift that keeps on giving. Already earning the title of being one of the best games of all time hasn't left FromSoft resting on its laurels, as Elden Ring keeps surprising us.
Despite the Lands Between being a rich realm stocked with all kinds of demigods and monsters, your experience can be a sometimes lonely one. When you're into your second hour of trudging across Liurnia of the Lakes, you might feel as tired as the Tarnished. Thankfully, you have your trusty steed to help make things a little quicker. But did you know, Torrent was almost even more useful?
What Happened To Elden Ring's Horse Attack?
For the maidenless, Torrent is the Spectral Steed - which is basically a ghost horse that helps you traverse Elden Ring's massive world quicker than walking. Torrent has proven his worth time and time again, helping you ride around some of the more nimble bosses or dash out of a sticky situation. Buried deep in the Elden Ring data, it turns out Torrent was supposed to have his own attack.
YouTuber Zuille the Witch is known for diving deep into the files of Souls-like games, and has previously unearthed some fascinating details on the likes of Dark Souls. Now, they've released a video that confirms Torrent originally had an attack where he could kick enemies into next week. There's a cut animation for a powerful hind leg kick, that would undoubtedly send Godskin Apostles flying.
Zuille says that the ride prompt in Elden Ring's Network Test suggests that the Tarnished's hairy horse was going to exist separately from the player, rather than being tethered as closely when riding. The video proved that the kick actually works as a launch against enemies. Adding some more personality to Torrent, there are also cut animations for him shaking his mane and eating grass. We didn't know Spirit Steeds needed to eat grass, but there you go.
Could Torrent's Attack Be Added Back In?
It's unclear why FromSoftware would've cut Torrent's attack, but there's clearly a reason. We've already spoken about Elden Ring's gruelling difficulty, and if Torrent had a powerful kick that can send foes flying when they get too close, maybe it was simply too OP. Zuille takes it one step further and speculates it was simply too hard to pull off. To actually use the attack, you'd have to back Torrent up to an enemy like a reversing truck.
You might remember, someone has also discovered the raunchy thong armour that was also cut from the final build - proving there's a lot out there that didn't quite make it. Of course, this isn't the end of Elden Ring. In only a matter of weeks, the developer has already rolled out a beefy update that added new quests and even a new NPC. There are also secret areas that suggest a DLC, so who knows, maybe Torrent will get his chance to kick ass?
