There's been a recent boom in stellar video game adaptations, and while things are still very hit-and-miss at the box office (thanks, Borderlands), the small screen looks like the definitive home for great reimaginings. While Paramount's Halo series floundered, we've seen massive success with HBO's The Last of Us and Amazon's Fallout.
Although we were originally worried about adapting the wide world of the wasteland, Westworld showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were on hand to help Bethesda's Todd Howard crack open the IP's vault of potential. Like The Last of Us swept the awards board, there were high hopes that Fallout could also clean up at this year's Emmys.
Fallout misses out on major Emmy Awards
As arguably the most prestigious awards ceremony for television, the 2024 Emmys was one to watch. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards had Fallout nominated for three of the big ones, but sadly, it missed out on all of them. Even though Fallout won Creative Arts Emmy Awards for Outstanding Music Supervision and Outstanding Emerging Media Program, that's not enough for some.
Fallout was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Walton Goggins' role as Cooper Howard/The Ghoul, and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for the series premiere. Unfortunately, it was pipped to the post in all three, notably losing out to FX's Shogun for Outstanding Drama Series.
There was some stiff competition this year, and particularly in Outstanding Drama Series, Fallout was up against Shogun, The Crown, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, and 3 Body Problem. Fallout might've been considered an outsider, but for the show's most loyal fans, they claim the series was robbed.
One vocal comment says, "Happy for the team but y’all got robbed for outstanding drama IMO," while another added, "You forgot the 3rd award: ⚡Capturing The Fans' Hearts." A third concluded, "Man, watched the Emmy's last night and imo Fallout was completely robbed. I mean the other shows were cool but Fallout deserved a win, especially The Ghoul."
The Outstanding Drama Series category was especially tough this year, but for many, they feel Goggins was deserving of the win for Outstanding Lead Actor. In the end, the Emmy went to Hiroyuki Sanada's portrayal of Lord Yoshii Toranaga. It was an especially good night for Shogun, earning a record-breaking 18 awards and beating Game of Thrones' previous honour.
Even if you feel Fallout was 'robbed', the continued recognition of video game adaptations is important. The Last of Us became the first live-action video game adaptation to be nominated in major Emmy categories in 2023, but like Fallout, missed out on winning any 'major' Emmy awards. Hopefully both Fallout and The Last of Us can score big with their upcoming second seasons.
