Like many other games, EA FC (formerly FIFA) has often struggled to balance the difference between being a realism simulator and an arcade title.
The series has been the leading figure in sports games for the better part of three decades, but it's often favoured a cheesier and quirkier style of gameplay than other football titles (Football Manager, for example) while maintaining the integrity of the beautiful game.
Now, FC 25 has compacted all of its arcade-ness into one pocket-sized game mode and has pushed realism to the forefront, and fans seem to like it.
FC 25 players lead to games defence over 'slow' criticisms
Over the years, Ultimate Team has become a bit repetitive, with different 'meta' quirks that can easily result in goals. It started with the one-two pass-and-run cheese of old, then chipped--through balls and pace merchants kicked in, and most recently, it was the finesse dribbling and byline cutbacks that succeeded.
But FC 25 has leaned into tactics, making many different styles of play effective with practice, and has seemingly rid the game of -most- quirks (the L1/LB dribble is still problematic).
After catching a lot of flak for being 'slow', players are now leaping to the game's defence. "FC 25, every opponent feels different, a bunch of different tactics actually work, no-one is spamming the exact same play all game, and the passing feels smooth," said one fan in a popular Tweet.
"It's Slower BECAUSE you aren't using 5 star 5 star 99 overalls anymore, no s**t it's slower," they added.
"Couldn’t agree more," said a second fan. "Even when I lose I’m not mad rn, just trying to figure out how to upgrade my tactics."
A third added, "Love the new tactics part and if you change in game to combat the opponents tactics it always makes it easier."
Instead, all of the arcade-style cheese has been rolled into the popular mode Rush, which will only grow into a FIFA Street replica as cards get stronger and faster throughout the year.
