Will there ever be a 'final' Final Fantasy? Square Enix's fantasy favourite slows no signs of slowing down, and in 2023, we've finally been gifted the long-awaited Final Fantasy 16. It's been 36 years since we first met the Warriors of Light, and frankly, it's baffling to see how far the series has come.

Final Fantasy has evolved from its humble fantasy RPG roots, and these days, it's considered a full-blown action RPG. For many, the peak of Final Fantasy was 1991's Final Fantasy IV on the SNES, and honouring this classic, Final Fantasy 16 has an epic Final Fantasy 4 Easter egg.

My kind of Easter Egg

Although we don't see a flash of Cecil Harvey's silver hair in Final Fantasy 16, Square Enix's latest outing brings back the legendary Spoony Bard. Back in Final Fantasy 4,  the Great Sage Tellah mocked Edward Chris von Muir as a "Spoony Bard," and it's been referenced numerous times since.

Way back when, Tellah was on the lookout for his daughter, learning that Anna had run off with the trickster bard. Anna is mortally injured by Edward, but instead of running him through with a sword like most of us wood, Tellah goes with the odd insult of, "You Spoony Bard."

Reddit user u/shatteredmatt showed off the sneaky Easter egg where we see the Spoony Bard. Others have found him singing a merry song. Responding to this well-hidden Final Fantasy 16 Easter egg one fan cheered, "I lost it when I stumbled across him. The game already has lots of fun little touches for series vets."

Is Spoony Bard an insult?

There's been much debate over the years about what "Spoony Bard" actually means. Many think it was lost in translation, with Japanese censorship meaning it also downplayed Tellah's rage. Similar to Final Fantasy 6's "son of a submariner" likely being a stand in for "son of a b*tch," "Spoony Bard" is thought to mean "slut."

The Spoony Bard is one of the Final Fantasy series' most longstanding traditions. From someone being flung the insult in Final Fantasy 10 to the Bard quests in Final Fantasy 14 referencing it, even Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney jokes about the Spoony Bard.

While we'll likely never understand the joke of the Spoony Bard, things have come full circle for it to be included in Final Fantasy 16. Still, as the most ambitious entry in the franchise's history, it makes sense that we honour that musical blaggard.
