It's the end of an era for The Witcher, and like it or not, Henry Cavill is getting ready to cast his last spell as Geralt of Rivia. Although Cavill is exiting stage left, The Witcher will continue with a new Geralt - in the form of Liam Hemsworth.
The first trailer for The Witcher Season 3 is showing a united front with Cavill at the helm, but unfortunately, there's an angry legion of disgruntled viewers who are ringing the show's death knell before Hemsworth has even swung his sword.
The Witcher Season 3 trailer is a worrying sign
In the first teaser for The Witcher Season 3, we see a shot of Geralt, Ciri (Freya Allen), and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), with Ciri being embraced by her protectors. The poster was supposed to tease the season's first trailer, but looking at the comments, it's had an adverse effect.
The replies were soon filled with salty comments and "in memoriam" of Netflix's hit series. When one pointed out the show hasn't been cancelled, another added, "No, but it will be if you don't watch this season. So, please, don't watch this season."
Another added, "Ah yes the final season," while a third said, "Bring back Henry Cavill and fire writers instead." A fourth left a passionate Tweet saying, "There is no show without Henry Cavill, the only person who actually cared to follow the lore and make the show somewhat watchable."
If that wasn't bad enough, the first trailer dropped and led to even more rage from wannabe Witchers. One raged, "Lauren ruined the show lol. Show is done for after this season," before someone else raged, "Why should I bother watching knowing this season was so bad it was clearly the reason your star left after?"
Are more seasons of The Witcher on the way?
Although there are plans to move ahead with Season 4 and 5 as planned, the idea that Cavill was going to be locked in for seven seasons seems like a distant memory. With Season 4 rumbling forward, we'll at least get one more outing, although Season 5 is far from certain right now.
The world of The Witcher was rocked to its core, when back in October 2022, Cavill announced Season 3 would be his last. There were rumbles of discourse behind the scenes, with complaints the writers actively don't like the books and games - something disputed by showrunner Lauren Hissrich.
There was the bombing of The Witcher: Blood Origin being dubbed Netflix's worst show, and while Hissirch has promised Hemsworth will bring a "new energy," that hasn't stopped legions from promising they'll boycott The Witcher. From the Season 3 trailer reveal, it sounds like they mean it.
