In a time when games are flocking back to mobile, such as Epic's duo of Fortnite (unless you're UK-based) and Rocket League Sideswipe, one of the biggest viral sensations is returning to the app store after ten years.
Flappy Bird became one of the most downloaded mobile games of all time back in 2014, gaining mass attention for its notorious difficulty, where friends and family alike would hold their records as bragging rights.
But after being abruptly removed from the stores due to the developer's guilt over its addictive nature, a new set of video game designers have acquired the rights to Flappy and his friends - all set to make a comeback this year.
Flappy Bird returns in 2024
The Flappy Bird Foundation has officially revealed that a new version of the app will be available in 2024 after it acquired the game rights from Gametech Holdings LLC and Flappy's rights from Piou vs. Cactus.
Launching in 2024, Flappy Bird will take a very different approach, though. The side-scroller won't be a never-ending record-reacher but instead slips much closer into the Super Mario category with different game modes and islands to conquer.
Multiple new game modes will be available, such as "Think you got game?", which is a basketball shooter designed to lead your bird into buckets, and "EZ mode", which is very much what it says on the tin.
There will also be a Fall Guys-esque online battle royale mode where 100 Flappy's will take to the skies to compete against each other to earn rewards and cosmetics on the way.
In a public statement, Flappy Bird Foundation. Chief Michael Roberts said, "It’s been a decade-long, convoluted journey to get here, but we’re so excited to finally begin sharing Flappy Bird once again with the world.
"We are beyond excited to be bringing back Flappy Bird and delivering a fresh experience that will keep players engaged for years to come. We have big plans for our little Bird!”
Players will have to access Flappy Bird through Telegram for its initial release, with iOS, Android, desktop, and web browser support all being pencilled in for 2025.
