Battle royale games might've dropped from their peak at the height of the pandemic, but that hasn't stopped their importance in the world of video games. Sitting pretty at the top is Epic Games' Fortnite, which continues to evolve and keep things fresh.
There have been 30 seasons of Fortnite at the current count, and with that, most have come with a Battle Pass. Introduced in Season 2, we regularly shell out our V-Bucks to buy the Battle Pass and level up in hopes of getting those exclusive wraps, emotes, and skins. The problem is, once they're gone, they're gone.
Fortnite dashes legacy Battle Pass hopes
We all know that one player who loves to flex their Battle Pass skills, having unlocked Golden Agent Peely by reaching Level 300 in Chapter 2 Season 2. The problem is that getting everything from a Fortnite Battle Pass requires a ridiculous grind that most of us simply don't have time to do.
This has led to calls for Epic Games to put some of the old Battle Pass items in the shop, because let's be honest, we'd all be throwing our V-Bucks at Chapter 2 Season 4's Mystique skin. As well as this somewhat defeating the point of having the Battle Pass, it's an idea that Epic Games has now formally stopped in its tracks.
Players recently noticed that Chapter 5 Season 2's Swim Free Lobby track appeared in the shop. Not long after they dashed to grab the track for themselves, Epic Games cleared up the confusion and confirmed its arrival in the shop was a mistake. Anyone who bought it will now have their V-Bucks refunded.
Over on Reddit, disappointed players said this has shattered their hopes of the legacy Battle Pass system. Epic has reiterated that the Battle Pass and its items are here for a short amount of time until they're gone forever. One disappointed fan wrote, "They think if they sell BP cosmetics that it would lead to BP holders dropping but honestly that's BS."
Someone else added, "Best compromise is let people buy the battle passes and make them work for it on their own time. If they start selling bp items individually, I'd stop my Fortnite crew sub and prolly never buy another bp again. If I'm thinking this way there’s bound to be others. F**k FOMO tho."
Others noted that being part of the divisive Fortnite Crew doesn't even give you exclusive skins, as the terms and conditions confirm they could be added at a later date. With a Marvel-themed Chapter 5 Season 4 reportedly on the way, this issue has reared its head with a reminder that the Marvel Chapter 2 Season 4 gave us the 'best' Battle Pass.
We've had some great battle passes over the years, with the aforementioned Marvel season, Season 3 giving us the John Wick-inspired Reaper, and the gaming crossovers of Chapter 4 Season 1. Sadly, unless you've got a DeLorean you've got tucked away, you won't be replaying those golden oldies.
