Fortnite is a treat for millions of players, but it also serves as the bane of the existence of one key demographic. Parents.

There's no doubt that a good deal of the revenue that Fortnite has accrued has been from stolen credit cards, and for some time, this is a fact that has gone without any kind of respite for sufferers of little s**ts updating their battle passes without permission.

But now, as a lawsuit comes to an end, it looks like help is here.

Fortnite is paying out to victims of stolen credit cards

A glowing chest in Fortnite.

If you were the victim of unwanted Fortnite purchases between 2017 and 2022, then there may be good news for you, as with the end of a lawsuit with the FTC, Fortnite has agreed to dish out some refunds.

After a pretty big spat with the FTC, Fortnite has agreed to settle a suit for $245 million, offering to recompense those whose credit cards were pinched in order to pay for V-Bucks.

The payout comes after the FTC accused Epic Games' battle royale champion of using "design tricks, known as dark patterns, to dupe millions of players into making unintentional purchases." It's a pretty heavy claim, but it looks like Fortnite has backed down and taken it on the chin.

But, most importantly here, you could be due compensation.

How can I claim a refund from Fortnite?

If you believe you should be eligible for a refund, here are the three categories that the FTC and Epic Games expect you to appear in:

  • You were charged in-game currency for items you didn't want between January 2017 and September 2022
  • Your child made charges to your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018
  • Your account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after you complained to your credit card company about wrongful charges

If you reckon any of these apply to you, you can fill out a form on the FTC website to put in your claim.

This is a pretty big deal, as this makes Epic Games the subject of the biggest video game refund lawsuit in history - but hey, who cares as long as you can get your money back?
