Fortnite’s Doctor Who collab could be dead in the water

The rumoured crossover between Fortnite and Doctor Who is apparently a complete "myth," as showrunner Russell T. Davies gives fans an update on the proposed collab.

The idea of the Whoniverse and Fortnite colliding has just taken a dent, and now, our hopes of zooming around Grand Glacier in that big, blue, box have potentially been exterminated. Fortnite is known for its colourful pop culture crossovers, and while we've heard a lot about one with Doctor Who, something is amiss.

With everything from Alien to The Walking Dead, Metal Gear to Ariana Grande, we've had some weird and wonderful crossovers, but occasionally, we get something more. With mini-passes for the likes of Star Wars and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, we'd hoped Doctor Who had enough to warrant a collab as big as the inside of the TARDIS.

Fortnite x Doctor Who crossover debunked

Over on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies has branded the collab as a "myth." When someone asked Davies on Instagram whether he could give us any information on the crossover, he responded, "There isn’t one! It’s a complete myth, I’m afraid x."

There have been plenty of leaks about the crossover, so we're not sure what's happened here. Responding to the news, one Fortnite fan held out hope and wrote, "I wouldn't put too much into his words because A) the people who leaked it are the ones who are very credible with Fortnite and B) Davies is known for straight up lying in order to create surprise."

Still, others accepted it's time to give up. When someone said, "Of course he's lying," another added, "He could have also chosen to ignore the comment completely." Someone else concluded, "Honestly always seemed that way."

"For over a year random Fortnite leakers always bring this specific collab up, but every couple months they change up and say 'oh it was delayed 3 months, also they’re completely revamping what’s featured in it also they’re trying to align the release with an anniversary, also they’re completely revamping it again, also it’s been delayed another 3 months'."

While there's always a sliver of hope, it sounds like the Fortnite x Doctor Who crossover rumours were all some villainous scheme of the Master.

Fortnite's Doctor Who collab might never have been real

Doctor Who Fortnite

Has this been the ultimate trick? We know the gaming industry likes to throw out the odd rumour, but with Fortnite rarely steering us wrong, this is one hell of a collab to be debunked. The last we heard, LEGO Fortnite was taking precedent, while the Doctor Who crossover had been pushed into 2024.

As well as skins based on Fourteen (David Tennant) and Fifteen (Ncuti Gatwa), there was word of a special Battle Pass featuring U.N.I.T. quests and unique weapons. We'd previously warned you how rumours of a May 4 release seemed unlikely, but now, the whole thing has come crashing down.

We'll be honest, it seemed odd that a Doctor Who collab was coming in 2024, especially as it meant it would've missed the show's 60th anniversary last year. Also, the three Tennant-led specials toward the end of the year would've been another perfect opportunity. There's always the debut of the new season, but to be honest, we feel Epic has lost the keys to the T.A.R.D.I.S.
