Furiosa may have made Mad Max’s 2015 game canon

With Furiosa finally on the way, it appears that digging out the 2015 game from Avalanche may prove useful as it looks to be canon thanks to the film's scripts.

With Furiosa being touted as one of the biggest movies of 2024, it seems more vital than ever to replay Avalanche’s 2015 Mad Max game, which the upcoming film may have made canon, according to a series of tweets from those who have read the script.

While it may not have received enough acclaim at the time (releasing in the same year as Fallout 4, The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne) it may be time to revisit the game (or play it for the first time) before heading out to the cinema to watch Furiosa.

Could the game be canon?

In a series of tweets from film writer and critic Drew McWeeny, it appears that, having read the script and the notes along with it, content from the 2015 Mad Max game may have made its way into Furiosa in some form. At least enough to make it a canon part of the series.

While it's unclear as to which parts of the 2015 game tie-in to Furiosa, the world of Mad Max is as brutal as it is convoluted in terms of timeline.

However, with Furiosa being a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, it may be the case that we simply see characters or references from the game making their way in.

What is the Mad Max game?

The Mad Max game was released several months after Mad Max: Fury Road to something of a mixed response from critics, and was never envisioned as a movie tie-in.

For a time Cory Barlog, director of God of War, even had his name attached to a collaboration with the film's director, George Miller.

The game featured intense vehicular combat, a desolate post-apocalyptic open world (would you have it any other way with Mad Max?) and characters and settings that, while appearing in a general sense, connected to the story of Fury Road. Namely, Scabrous Scrotus (the son of the film's villain, Immortan Joe) Gas Town, and Thunderdome.

If these references weren't enough to tie the films and the games together, we'll just have to wait and watch Furiosa to find out just what makes the game canon.

So, with Furiosa fast approaching and the references peppered in, only time will tell just how much of a role the Mad Max video game will play in the prequel film. But, in my opinion, you should go and play it anyway, it's an underrated gem and, this time, won't have to compete with the 2024 releases
