Forget GTA IV, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or even 2018's God of War reboot, there's only one game that should be consistently making lists of best video games of all time. Whether it's the fact it's never been remade or because it was a crossover between the legends that are The Simpsons and GTA, The Simpsons: Hit & Run has become a cult classic.
Back in 2003, Radical Entertainment filled up the tank and raced into action with The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Following earlier success with The Simpsons: Road Rage being a Crazy Taxi parody, Radical cashed in on GTA III's hype. Now, a group of fans are attempting to do the same with Matt Groening's other hit series, Futurama.
What Is Futurama: Hit & Run?
While The Simpsons is still going strong some 33 years after it first debuted, Futurama has a more complicated history since its debut in 1999. Despite the sci-fi series having been cancelled twice already - and a return on the way for Hulu - there's still a loyal fan base that would bite your hand off for a Futurama game. Good job we've got Futurama: Hit & Run.
The brainchild of Slurm Team, the project has been in the works for the last three years and is a complete reimagining of the Hit & Run playstyle in the wooooooorld of tomorrow. The project is described as a total conversion mod for the OG Hit & Run, which is aiming to "replicate the gameplay of Hit & Run in the world of Futurama, with all fully from scratch 3D models, built from the ground up like it was an intended expansion pack for the game."
In the trailer, we see controllable versions of Fry, Leela, and Bender, who replace the likes of Homer, Marge, and Bart in Hit & Run. Other familiar faces like Tinny Tim, Angleyne, and NPC Cygnoids can be seen, as well as a variety of different vehicles to drive, and iconic costumes like Fry's astronaut suit. We imagine this is just the tip of the ice(Zoid)berg.
When Is Futurama: Hit & Run Out?
Slurm Team confirms the demo is due for release some time around late August or early September, while a full release is currently unknown. We also don't know how much of the game the demo will include, but we imagine it would be a starting level. Even though there are no details on the game's plot, it's likely that the villainous Mom will have a part to play.
You can keep up with progress over on Donut Team, which has revealed character models for Hermes, Amy Wong, Calculon, and Nibbler, with all of them presumably NPCs as part of character quests. The team is currently looking for everything from 3D character modellers to voice actors, so if you want to lend a hand, get in touch. Probably the biggest hurdle facing Futurama: Hit & Run is players tracking down a PC copy of The Simpsons: Hit & Run, but that's for us to worry about.
