Gamers convinced Star Wars Eclipse has been cancelled

After a period of silence from Quantic Dream about Star Wars Eclipse, the departure of its Lead Writer has fans convinced that the game has been quietly cancelled.

In the words of Master Yoda himself, "Do or do not, there is no try." Unfortunately for Star Wars Eclipse, it could be a case of do not. After a period of uncomfortable silence about Quantic Dream's action-adventure game, a major staff departure has us worried the game has been quietly sidelined like Gina Carano from The Mandalorian.

Like any major franchise, Star Wars has had great and not-so-great games over the years. Much like the live-action movies, for every Knights of the Old Republic and The Empire Strikes Back, we've had a Kinect Star Wars and Attack of the Clones. Although the galaxy continues to expand, it might be leaving Eclipse marooned in the Outer Rim.

Fans worried Star Wars Eclipse has been axed

As reported by The Gamer, Lead Writer Adam Williams has left the project and Quantic Dream altogether. Where this leaves Eclipse is unclear, and while it's possible Williams had completed writing or someone else can pick up the slack, the fact we've heard so little about the game has set alarm bells ringing.

Originally revealed back at The Game Awards in 2021, Eclipse gave us a suitably glossy cinematic trailer and confirmed it was in "early development." Set during the High Republic era, some 100 years before The Phantom Menace, we've recently visited this period of the franchise with Leslye Headland's The Acolyte TV series.

Teasing a new era of Star Wars video games while throwing in some beloved elements like Yoda means Eclipse had everyone hyped, but much like the beloved Star Wars 1313, this could be an amazing game that's resigned to the franchise's great "What if?" trash compactor. Williams' departure is even more worrying when you remember reports of the game's troubled development

Other fans have picked up on these concerns, and when the news was shared on the r/gaming subreddit, many feared the worst. Someone wrote, "I'm not gonna lie, I'll be shocked if this game comes out at all. The initial teaser is more of a moving mood board than anything tangible, and it's been almost three years of radio silence since."

Another sceptic added, "This game will be cancelled, I feel like it’s a certainty at this point," while a third concluded, "Feels like both Star Wars (this, KOTOR remake) and DC had been unlucky in gaming department. It's unfortunate that both are my go to franchise as well."

We'd like to point out that Quantic Dream hasn't addressed Williams' departure yet, but if we were the studio and still intent on making Eclipse happen, we'd speak up pretty soon. It's clear from the comments that most have seemingly forgotten it exists or had already assumed it was cancelled.

While the idea of a AAA game set in the High Republic era is full of promise, Quantic Dream's controversial reputation has also made its involvement a questionable decision. There's still (new) hope that Eclipse can rise from the ashes like a charred Anakin Skywalker, but with every bit of news about the project, we're worried it's already been Force-choked to death.
