Asking someone about the best video game remake of all time is like trying to pick the best '90s shooter - it's just too hard to do. Still, the depths of Reddit have been stirred by this very debate, as gamers are trying to decide the best remake of all time.
We've had some absolute bangers over the years, and only recently, we've seen the likes of Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake and Dead Space. Upcoming titles like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Silent Hill 2, and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will surely earn the big bucks, but let's look back at the greats.
Reddit can't decide the best video game of all time
A popular thread asking what's the best video game of all time highlights Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 and wants your input. The top comment reads, "Tony Hawk PS1+2, Spyro & Crash trilogies, the two Bluepoint remakes (SHOTC and Demons Souls)."
Throughout, there's a lot of love for Bluepoint Games' 2018 Shadow of the Colossus remake that gives new life to the 2005 fantasy favourite. Another added, "It's been a top 5 game for me since the original on PS2 I'm so glad it got a PS4 remake the tech feels there to really bring the vision to life."
Someone else championed Capcom's Resident Evil remake from 2002, saying, "The remake of the first Resident Evil. In my opinion the remake of the first Resident Evil is one of the best remakes ever made and an example to follow for those who want to make a remake of a game."
A third gushed, "Metal Gear Solid - The Twin Snakes deserves a mention. So many quality of life fixes, mostly features from MGS2, without removing the soul of the game it was built on. And the classic 'you've been playing Super Mario Sunshine, haven't you' Psycho Mantis boss battle."
The Metroid Prime remaster doesn't count as a remake, but still, someone concluded, "Metroid Prime is a remaster, they just overhauled the visuals so significantly you'd think it was a remake." At the end of the day, there are some absolute bangers out there that have given the greats a fresh lick of paint.
Remakes are still big business
We've been spoiled recently, but fear not, even more remakes are coming. Although Nintendo has pumped the breaks on more classic Zelda games, there are plenty of others out there. Thankfully, not everything is as rough as the remastered GTA Trilogy, and remakes tend to make even more bank than the original.
Aside from the previously mentioned remakes, there are others like Super Mario RPG, Lollipop Chainsaw, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (if it escapes development hell). Now, just imagine if we got that mythical Bloodborne remake? We can only dream.
