What is the hardest game you’ve ever played? The question was posted on Reddit’s gaming subreddit earlier today and a huge range of games have been put forward.

From seemingly innocent children’s titles to devilish platformers, a little bit of everything has made its way into Reddit’s list of tough games.

Reddit users are sharing the most difficult games they have ever played

Whether you have powered through Alien: Isolation on Nightmare mode, beat "Fectors Challenge" in Stardew Valley or just played the same level of a seemingly innocuous game hundreds of times before giving up completely, you have probably encountered a difficult game in the course of your life.

In a recent Reddit thread started by u/WestonConnor26, people have been sharing the toughest games they have come across since they started gaming.

Ninja Gaiden on the NES

One of the top answers on the thread was Ninja Gaiden, which was released on the NES in the early 1990s.

One player said: “I played the first Level and thought "oh that's easy". That Was also the last time I said that.”

Another commented: “This is immediately what I thought of as well. Although I didn't really play it long enough to be a good judge of it, bc I said "Nope" very early on.”

Battletoads

The 1991 beat-em-up game, Battletoads, was the top answer on the thread, with several people expressing that they weren’t sure why they liked the game or if it was even beatable.

“So many of these old platformers that I have amazing and fun memories of were just f'n impossible. Why did we like them so much?”

“Was that even possible to finish? Because damn, it sure felt like it wasn't,” added another commenter.

Super ghouls and ghosts on the SNES

Another 1991 title, Super ghouls and ghosts from the SNES was also brought up several times throughout the thread.

The commenter who suggested the platformer said: “I don't think I've ever gotten past the first level.”

Another added: “I did beat it one summer when I was a teen and motivated by hate. But I didn't beat it twice to get the real ending because screw that noise. Once is good enough.”

Cuphead

One of the most recent releases on the list is Cuphead, 2017’s gun and run side-scroller that made many players feel like they were quite literally in hell.

“Still rage Quitting this game in my head,” wrote one commenter.

Another said: “I never made it past the tutorial. My readers make fun of me, but I know damn well that jump dash was the single most difficult enemy in any game.”

Of course, there were plenty more games mentioned throughout the thread, including the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for the NES, which was intended for six year olds to enjoy, and FTL: Faster Than Light.

While everyone finds different things challenging, especially in gaming, it is clear to see that there are some games that are just tough no matter who you are.
