It looks like the gears are finally starting to turn on the dormant Gears of Wars franchise, and as The Coalition reaches for the WD-40, the wheels are back in motion as the rumour mill fires into action once again. Now, one of the franchise's biggest names has teased the long-awaited reveal of Gears 6.
Blasting its way onto the shooter scene in 2006, Gears of War became one of the flagship Xbox exclusives alongside the likes of Halo. Even as Halo arguably overtook it as the console's poster boy shooter series, a loyal legion of Gears fans have kept it ticking along. Could 2024 finally be the year we get to see Gears 6?
JD Fenix voice actor seemingly hints at Gears 6
We've heard a lot about a potential sequel to 2019's Gears 5, and with that serving as something of a franchise refresh, there was plenty of scope for a continuation. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), JD Fenix actor Liam McIntyre hinted that we'll get some news on Gear 6 at June's Xbox Showcase.
The end of Gears 5 split off into two paths depending on whether you save JD or Del Walker, and when asked if JD's death is canon, Mcintyre said, "I have no idea. I think @GearsofWar tells us all in June. :)" It's far from confirmation that we'll get a Gears 6 reveal, but it has us even more eager for the showcase.
Although Gears 5 was played by three million people in its first weekend, was Microsoft's most successful first-party launch since Halo 4, and the biggest launch for Xbox Game Pass at the time, its sales for around 4.5 times less than Gears 4 in the UK. There's still an appetite for the series, and after things have gone quiet, we're ravenous for more.
We're all ready for Gears 6
McIntrye has lit a fire under the backside of Gears fans that the series needs right now, with the comments proving there will be plenty of us buying into the next chapter. There were all the usual Jeremy Renner memes of "Don't give me hope," as we 'gear' up for a potential June reveal.
We've previously heard that The Coalition is moving into Unreal Engine 5, teasing a far more advanced Gears 6 (if that's what it's working on). Insiders mentioned the potential of an open-world Gears last year, while others have said we "aren't ready" to see what Gears 6 has planned. Here's hoping Mcintyre has the inside track, and this isn't just some cruel joke.
