The Gears of War series has been sat quietly since the launch of Gears 5, seemingly waiting its turn for whatever is yet to come. What with Xbox's current exclusive lineup, who knows what it could do with something like The Coalition's next title?

We don't know an awful lot about the upcoming title from the Gears team just yet, which probably isn’t great for Xbox in the ongoing struggle for new games post-Starfield. All we can do is speculate about what the team is up to, but it looks like the man behind the franchise's glory days has some lofty ideas.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Cliff Bleszinski has suggested that the future of Gears of War could lie in a reboot. He'd like to take a leaf out of Sony Santa Monica's book with 2018's God of War, which lifted its franchise into immense critical acclaim.

Bleszinski suggests that the series could do with a "little bit of a reboot," and added, "I’ve always said, Phil Spencer has my number. I’m happy to consult. Gears will always be near and dear to my heart." The creator might have moved on to his own comic book now, but his input is something that the Gears franchise could do with.

The Gears series still saw success with Gears 5, but it's easy to see that the series peaked with the launch of Gears of War 3. Even though it has performed well since, it hasn't stuck around in the cultural consciousness for too long. Maybe Bleszinski’s input is what the franchise needs.

Cliff Bleszinski gets wistful about Gears' past

"Late afternoon, if I have a mimosa in me, sometimes I'll go to YouTube and I'll look up key cut scenes from the Gears franchise, like Dom's death, or Dom having to put down his wife, and I read the comments," Bleszinski confesses in the interview.

"Reading the comments on those cut scenes from Gears of War when Dom dies, people are like, ‘I had to put the controller down, my friend and I just sat there silenced and stunned.’ For people to actually get tattoos of something that you made on their bodies is the most flattering thing."

It's sweet that Bleszinski is still reminiscing about his work on Gears, especially as he had such a hand in bringing it to life. Here's hoping he finds the chance to get involved again soon, because let's be honest, we're getting tired of waiting around.
