Gears is back, and Gears of War: E-Day looks to be a return to the look and feel of the earliest days of the franchise.

The 'gears' are finally turning again, and although we're not exactly surprised that a new Gears of War is coming, we aren't getting Gears of War 6 as had previously been rumoured.

In fact, Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel to the series' debut, and focuses on Marcus and Dom once again during the conflict that forged their friendship.

More Gears of War is officially on the way

In an Xbox Wire blog post, it was revealed that the game is set 14 years before the first game and will focus on Emergence Day (E-Day) - the day the subterranean Locust made their appearance on Sera.

It'll even showcase the origins of the Chainsaw Lancer, although the weapon itself isn't around at this point in the timeline, while the throwback music of "Mad World" from the initial advertising of Gears of War has me feeling all nostalgic.

Worried the game will feel like a smaller project? Worry not, COG.

"It’s also important to note that E-Day is not a spin-off, it’s a completely new entry to the mainline series, set earlier in the timeline," the blog post explains.

"The events of the game not only serve as an exciting origin tale of two beloved characters, but it also adds detail and context to this period that will resonate through stories that will follow."

We know original Gears creator Cliff Bleszinski has grand plans for a reboot after his proposed sequel fell through, but for the time being, the Gearsverse seems firmly in the hands of The Coalition. Importantly, Gears is the latest Xbox franchise to get a new lease of life.

June 9's Xbox Showcase turned out to be one to remember, bolstering the Green Team's ranks with reveals of a Starfield expansion, a gameplay blowout for Black Ops 6, and a new look at Perfect Dark.
