No, Ghost of Tsushima 2 isn’t delayed because of a Sly Cooper revival

New rumours that Ghost of Tsushima 2 has been delayed should be taken with a pinch of salt, as apparently, the long-mooted Sly Cooper revival isn't on the way.

When it comes to the Goliaths of the Sony catalogue, we tend to think of the likes of Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, and Sucker Punch Productions. The latter has delivered icons including Sly Cooper, Infamous, and Ghost of Tsushima, with a potential lineup of future titles having us excited.

Having long moved on from Sly Cooper, Sucker Punch is now known for its work on the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. The sword-swinging samurai adventure became one of Sony's fastest-selling first-party titles in 2020, so it's no surprise there have been rumbles of a sequel.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 hasn't been delayed

Sadly, as the years have gone on and we've been treated to the Director's Cut and the announcement of a live-action Ghost of Tsushima movie, Sony has gone quiet on a potential sequel. When one leaker claimed that Ghost of Tsushima 2 had been delayed to make way for a new Sly Cooper game, that rumour was quickly shut down.

Jason Schreier took to X (formerly Twitter) to quash rumours and clarify that Sucker Punch is a one-game studio. Due to Sucker Punch's size, Schreier says there's no way it's working on Ghost of Tsushima and Sly Cooper at the same time. We simply haven't heard from the former because it takes so long to make these games.

It's a double-edged sword that means Ghost of Tsushima 2 likely hasn't been delayed, but we won't be seeing that raucous raccoon anytime soon. We've heard about a Sly Cooper return since way back in 2021, but as each Sony State of Play comes and goes, there's still no sign of him.

Don't expect a Ghost of Tsushima reveal in 2024

Still, we don't see Jin Sakai swinging his sword just yet, with a Ghost of Tsushima 2 reveal unlikely to happen in 2024. During its fiscal year 2023 Q3 earnings briefing, Sony mentioned that it wasn't going to reveal "any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year."

Given that the fiscal year ends on March 31, 2025, this presumably pencils a Ghost sequel in for a reveal after April 2025. With Rise of the Ronin and Assassin's Creed: Codename Red both vying for a place in the samurai genre, it might be best to let the Ghost of Tsushima name rest for a while.

It doesn't sound like Sly Cooper will be making his way back into our lives soon. Although the secret ending of 2013's Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time hinted that there's more to come, the fan-favourite raccoon might've been thrown out with the trash.
