God of War fans desperate for remake to celebrate 20th anniversary

Rumours that 2005's God of War is getting a new-gen remake have resurfaced again, with players hyped that the release could celebrate the franchise's 20th anniversary.

It seems like an age since Kratos first picked up his Blades of Chaos, and while God of War is now associated with the bearded brute from 2018's reboot, many of us want to go back to the start and revisit the fresh-faced Kratos' first outing.

Modern remakes are nothing new, and more recently, we've seen the likes of Resident Evil and The Last of Us make bank from new-gen reimaginings. With The Last of Us coming out in 2013 and getting its own overhaul, God of War's 2005 release means it's more than overdue for a facelift.

God of War fans hyped about potential remake

The idea of heading back to the scorched plains of Ancient Greece is nothing new, but posting on X, @TCMFGames mused that a remake of the OG God of War could be coming in 2025. With this marking a milestone 20 years since the game first released, we can think of no better time to cash in on Kratos' legacy.

Responding to the idea, one supporter said, "I’d like them to flesh out the story of the original game more, to make it tie better into other games from the Greek saga." Another added, "If they made this a REMAKE using the GoW Ragnarok engine with a fully fleshed out story (think FF7 remake) then I'd be so freaking HYPED for this! The original trilogy is amazing but dated."

It comes after XboxEra's Nick Baker claimed he'd heard a remaster of the first three games "might be happening." Although Baker has a somewhat shaky history of leaks, he's also got his finger firmly on the pulse of the industry. He didn't make it clear whether the games would be done individually or packaged as one.

We could see Sony Santa Monica going down the Resident Evil route, and you only have to look at the chart-topping success Capcom has had since 2019's Resident Evil 2 remake to see this could be a lucrative move. The first three God of War games are icons in their own right, and we'd say there is more than enough meat to warrant individual remakes.

As God of War III already has a PS4 remaster, it doesn't need as much tuning as the others, but just imagine the first game getting a full overhaul akin to the Resi remakes. If it's a straight-up remaster of the GOAT, we're not as interested, but give us a proper GoW remake and we'll be throwing our money at it.

There's a lot of buzz about where the franchise (inevitably) goes after God of War Ragnarok, and while fans are throwing around ideas for which mythology we head to next, a remake/remakes of the earlier games can nicely fill in the gaps until we get there. If anything, we'd love to give Terrence C. Carson another go at voicing the Ghost of Sparta.
