While it looks like Fimbulwinter has put a 'freeze' on Sony's long-running God of War series, Santa Monica Studio could be ready to thaw Kratos and Atreus for a return to our screens. More than just defrosting this dynamic duo for some far-off adventure in a new mythology, optimistic fans think multiple games are on the way.

Aside from 2001's Kinetica, Santa Monica Studio's catalogue has consistently worked on God of War since 2005. 2022's God of War Ragnarok was a certified hit, while its Valhalla DLC seemingly closed the story last year. But, was anyone really buying that the Ghost of Sparta was out for the count?

Atreus in God of War Ragnarok

As spotted by Tech4Gamers, Santa Monica Studio has a slew of current openings. This isn't surprising, considering God of War (2018) Game Director Cory Barlog is working on a brand-new IP. However, this is the latest in a line of hints that Kratos and Atreus could be back sooner than expected.

The studio is looking for a Senior Combat Designer, with a mention that the ideal candidate will "be able to speak to and discuss, in-depth, hero combat systems, mechanics, and enemies in one or more 3rd person melee action RPGs." The interesting bit is "one or more", suggesting multiple projects are in the works.

With preferred experience mentioning both the 2018 reboot and Ragnarok, it definitely sounds like it could be Kratos-adjacent. The OP notes, "The fact that the very next statement under the preferred experience talks about familiarity with the last two God of War games leads me to believe that the studio is working on 2 new God of War entries."

Others agreed that this could be the start of a much bigger God of War universe, with someone else adding, "I've been hoping for an Atreus spin-off ever since playing Ragnarok. This is very good." Still, one concerned gamer concluded, "The last game was epic, but I hope Santa Monica doesn’t fall into the trap of making these new games just cash grabs."

This is obviously just wishful thinking, and at the time of writing, remember that there's no news on the franchise's future. Still, Ragnarok left the doors open for a jump to a new mythology, while eagle-eyed players have spotted potential references to the Egyptian and Japanese Pantheons.

We know there won't be another Norse mythology game, with Barlog explaining and increased development time between entries means it would've likely taken 15 years to tell a trilogy. We've previously suggested Chinese mythology, but for now, the war-worn Kratos is taking a rest.
