We're "axing" all the right questions as Kratos prepares to pick the Leviathan Axe for a sequel to 2018's God of War. With the tentatively titled God of War Ragnarok hopefully just around the corner, the former franchise director thinks it will be a cross-generation game that bridges the gap between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
2020 was a huge leap forward for the industry as the PS5's November release ushered in a new era and hit the ground running with the likes of Demon's Souls and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales coming fresh out the gate as Sony exclusives.
The jury is out on whether Ragnarok will be another PlayStation exclusive, but whether it is or not, gamers are demanding to know whether it will be locked to the PS5 or PS4 owners will get one final hurrah.
Despite the PS4 coming to the end of its life cycle in 2020, there were still major releases, including Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II to help the beloved console bow out in style.
Could God of War Ragnarok be cross-gen?
The God of War name goes all the way back to 2005, where the OG game ruled the roost and Kratos slashed his way through Greek mythology with his Blades of Chaos. Back then, David Jaffe was the overseer of the series and also served as Creative Director on 2007's God of War II on the PS2.
These days, Cory Barlog has climbed the ranks to become God of War Director. Despite someone new taking the reins, Jaffe is "sure" Ragnarok will come to both PS4 and PS5.
Jaffe responded to a fan question and put his money on Ragnarok being cross-gen when he said, "I'm sure the next God of War will be PS4, PS5. Of course it will. Jim Ryan has pretty much said as much". There was another twist to the tale when Jaffe posted a NSFW response to reports that Ragnarok will be cross-gen.
After a backlash against the report, Jaffe said, "What @‘s the matter w/some of y’all f***stix?! I have ZERO knowledge if the new GOW Is crossgen (but come on, of course it is). I was stating an opinion based on things Jim Ryan has said in press and the fact that I’m not a f*****g moron. It’s not my place to reveal ANY GOW info".
Should God of War Ragnarok be cross-gen?
With Miles Morales and the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West being cross-gen, there's a strong case that Rangarok should follow in their footsteps. Ultimately, we're left scrambling in the dark for any news.
Jaffe's previous mention of Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan "pretty much" saying it will be cross-gen isn't exactly true. Speaking to The Telegraph, Ryan reiterated he had "nothing to say" about confirming Ragnarok would be a current-gen exclusive for the PS5.
Ryan explained, "We’ve got a community of PS4 gamers 100 million-strong. It would be wrong to walk away from those people too early", then added, "Why would we stop giving them games?", before he shut the conversation down.
Whichever way you look at it, Sony is winding down production on PS4 models and slowly moving away from current-gen to crown the PS5 as the next rising star. For now, we'll have to keep our ears close to the ground with God of War Ragnarok's development.
