Gotham Knights fans, the joke could be on you. Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022 blew the doors off Geoff Keighley's in-person showcase, as we dived into everything from Hogwarts Legacy to The Callisto Protocol, Dead Island 2 to Sonic Frontiers. It was a mixed bag of cinematic and gameplay trailers, with Warner Bros. Montreal's Gotham Knights being a big one.
It feels like we've seen a thousand Gotham Knights trailers - thanks mainly to shuffled release dates and a drawn-out marketing campaign - but the latest gave us a closer look at the game's villains. As well as a glimpse at the already announced Court of Owls and Mr. Freeze, we got confirmation that Harley Quinn and Clayface are stepping out of the shadows. Was someone even more famous also lurking?
Is Joker In Gotham Knights?
It just wouldn't be a Batman game without Joker having a part to play, but then again, remember that Gotham Knights isn't a Batman game. The co-op title has you suiting up as members of the Bat Family, meaning you can pick between Batgirl, Robin, Red Hood, and Nightwing. As more heroes need more villains, some think a certain Clown Prince of Crime hiding in plain sight.
When Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022 showed off the Gotham Knights villains trailer, a few are theorising Joker is there - wearing his signature purple suit. In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, we see someone from the Court of Owls stepping out into a crowd. Although their face is obscured behind a mask, it's true that their wardrobe choice looks a lot like Joker's.
Not many picked up on this, but there were enough putting their best Batman-esque detective skills to good use. One said, "So you're telling me purple jacket isn't Joker," while another added, "2nd picture is the Joker, isn't it? They're going to pull an Arkham Origins again." A third concluded, "He showed up in Arkham Knight even after he died as a ghost just to troll Batman, there’s no way they can make a Batman project without Joker it’s just impossible." We'll admit it's a possibility... but will it happen?
Can Joker Be In Gotham Knights?
Although there's been some confusion, WB Montreal's upcoming superhero ensemble is NOT set in the same canon as Rocksteady's Arkham game. Still, it sometimes feels like we're picking up as an Arkham Knight sequel where Joker and Batman are dead. Rocksteady's Mr. J kicked the bucket back in 2011's Arkham City, and although he appeared in 2015's Arkham Knight, it was via flashback he was a figment of a tortured Batman's psyche. When it comes to Gotham Knight's Joker, we don't know his backstory... yet.
Going against the idea of Joker stopping by, Creative Director Patrick Redding told IGN that he's definitely not in the game. This was before the Harley reveal, where he said, "I will not confirm or deny whether Harley is." If Joker is a massive endgame twist in the game, then it makes sense that Redding would want to keep it a secret, but sadly, we might be reaching with this one. Still, listen out for the creepy cackle of that cunning clown when Gotham Knights releases on October 25.
