GTA 6 could be good news for Mafia: The Old Country’s release

Take-Two Interactive is set for a bumper 2025, and with GTA 6 releasing toward the end of the year, fans are hopeful that Mafia: The Old Country could be coming sooner than expected.

There was an unexpected horse's head in our bed on August 20, as Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024 rounded off with one last surprise. With all-star announcements like Borderlands 4 and the fact Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is coming to PS5, Geoff Keighley has one last surprise for us.

While we'd heard plenty about Hangar 13 working on a new Mafia game, we now know we'll be going back to the start to chart the rise of those gun-toting mobsters. Some are sure to be glad we're not getting a sequel to the middling Mafia III, and instead, we're heading to Sicily for the aptly named Mafia: The Old Country

Mafia: The Old Country could be coming sooner than expected

Mafia: The Old Country was a suitably superstar reveal to end Opening Night Live, and with it being confirmed for a loose 2025 release date, it's another AAA release locked into next year's bumper crop of releases. As noted by gamers on the GTA 6 subreddit, Mafia: The Old Country could realistically be just around the corner.

There's no escaping the fact that GTA 6 is likely to be the biggest game of 2025, if not the biggest game of all time. With that, we imagine that everyone will be avoiding the 'Fall 2025' release window, which is when Take-Two Interactive is set to release the automotive adventure.

As Mafia: The Old Country is also a Take-Two game, fans are speculating that Hangar 13 will want to release it as early in 2025 as possible to get out of GTA 6's way. The implication is that Mafia: The Old Country has been in the works for a long time and is almost ready to release.

To add fuel to the fire, we've been hearing about a Mafia prequel since 2022. Back then, leakers suggested the plot of the (then) unnamed Mafia 4 would focus on the Mafia's Don Salieri and the rise of the mob in Sicily. There was also wild speculation that Mafia 5 was going into production alongside the game, which became The Old Country.

With someone in the comments noting, "Take-Two is about to make a gazillion next year lol," let's also remember that Borderlands 4 is a Take-Two release. Similar to Mafia: The Old Country, could we see the next Borderlands releasing early in 2025, hoping to get swallowed up by the inevitable gaming black hole of GTA 6? Here's hoping we won't be waiting too long for either.
