Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was a lot of players' introduction to the series, but back then, most of the worries involved finding the fastest and cleanest cars to rob and the biggest heists to score.
But there was also the dynamic system of keeping up appearances. San Andreas forced players to take some time off from their lawless activities and scrub up. Recent rumours now claim that GTA 6 is bringing back the divisive dynamic body system, which could be a recipe for disaster.
GTA 6 could be bringing back dynamic body types
The dynamic body system saw your characters get dirty, grow facial hair, and even fluctuate in weight. They would get skinny when you were malnourished, gained pounds when you'd eaten and not exercised, and even got hench when hitting the dumbells.
This meant that if you wanted to look the part, you needed to shower, shave, and hit the gym. With GTA 6 expected to be the most advanced entry in the franchise, we're expecting some similarly inventive features when it releases in 2025.
Redditors have noticed that Jason and Lucia both appear to have different body types throughout leaked clips, while there have already been mentions of gyms and wrestling activities.
Is it time to leave dynamic bodies in GTA history?
Of course, this throws up some problems for GTA 6, as Rockstar will have to be careful not to make the game a body-shaming simulator. This is sure to especially be a problem if/when the online mode comes out.
While it might be a good idea to have a representation of all body shapes, the concept of becoming larger at the expense of not exercising and eating too much won't be representative of plus-size people. The same goes for housing skinny people being lumped in a malnourished category.
Back in San Andreas, CJ couldn't even start missions if he got "too fat," where he was ridiculed by NPCs for being "obese." It sounds like a recipe for disaster in the current world that is much more accepting of all body shapes.
Others think Rockstar will be moving with the times and suggest that GTA 6 will be much more progressive. If it can modernise the dynamic body feature, it could be a clever mechanic.
Whether dynamic bodies feature and whether they can be inclusive remains to be seen, but maybe it's a needless feature that only opens up Rockstar to criticism.
