By the time GTA 6 (hopefully) releases in 2025, it will have been a whopping 12 years since the last Grand Theft Auto. While the automotive adventure has kept its bank balance topped up with the record-breaking success of GTA Online, we're more than ready to return to Vice City for the franchise's next chapter.

With the aforementioned 12-year gap between games, players are expecting something special when GTA 6 eventually releases. GTA V got plenty of sprucing up thanks to the Expanded & Enhanced edition that was released in 2022, but with GTA 6 poised to be a truly new-gen game, the bar is already ludicrously high.

Ex-Rockstar dev warns we might be 'disappointed' by GTA 6

Former Rockstar dev Obbe Vermeij has shared his thoughts on where the series is heading, and with him having worked on the likes of the OG Vice City, he's got some impressive credentials. However, for those expecting a genre-defining leap in advancements, Vermeij says we should temper our expectations.

Speaking to SanInPlay, Vermeij mused, "It looks like they’ve just basically taken [GTA 5] even further, right?" Although he admits that the beach scene from the GTA 6 trailer is impressive because everyone has their own animation, he added, "I think that looks pretty amazing. But I don’t think it is going to be wildly different from GTA 5."

Warning that GTA 6 is in danger of being overhyped by fans, Vermeij said, "I think maybe people might be a little disappointed on the first day. But it’s still going to be the best game out there." When noting the massive leap between San Andreas and GTA IV, Vermeij says it'll be harder to reinvent the wheel like this again.

"It's harder to make the same step again because the technology is moving much slower," said Vermeij. He noted the difference between the PS1 and PS2 was huge, while the PS4 and PS5 don't have as much separating them. Despite admitting, "I think GTA 6 is not going to be wildly different from GTA 5," he's still confident it'll be amazing.

Even though Vermeij has been influential in some of Rockstars' best games, he has no insider info on what's going on with GTA 6. Alongside an agonising wait, more advanced AI and graphics befitting of a new-gen game means the hype couldn't be higher for GTA 6. Still, with it being tipped as one of the most important game releases of all time, in Rockstar we trust.
