In case you haven't heard, GTA 6 is releasing in 2025. The long-awaited next chapter in the Grand Theft Auto series is poised to be the biggest video game of all time, and with GTA V breaking records, the bar is already ludicrously high.
All signs are positive (for now), and although we've been waiting for a second trailer since December 2023, we're ready to embrace Jason and Lucia while heading back to Vice City to see what's new on those neon-splashed streets. While fans are expecting all that classic GTA wit, others are hoping for an injection of something different from another Rockstar favourite.
GTA 6 players want an Undead Nightmare DLC
You might remember that GTA V conspicuously skipped out on its promises of single-player DLCs. Instead, the world became caught up in the money-making madness of GTA Online, and with it helping GTA V to become the most profitable entertainment product of all time, we've never really looked back.
Assuming that GTA 6 will give us single-player DLCs (we can only hope), one fan on the r/GTA6 subreddit has floated the idea of an Undead Nightmare DLC. Taking the key art of Jason and Lucia and giving it an apocalyptic overhaul, it all looks very The Last of Us.
In case you don't know, Undead Nightmare was a DLC for 2010's Red Dead Redemption, taking place in an alternate timeline where the Wild West is overrun with brain-hungry munchers. Up there with The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine and Bloodborne's The Old Hunters, Undead Nightmare is rightly held as one of the best DLCs of all time.
To this day, we're surprised GTA has never made the most of the idea and (officially) given us zombies in GTA. Leaks of the scrapped GTA V single-player DLCs included the likes of aliens and an Agent Trevor storyline, with zombies also appearing in the files but failing to materialise.
Loving the concept of GTA 6: Undead Nightmare, one fan said, "They really need to do official GTA 6 zombie mod for both story mod and online mod. It will beat all survival/zombie games for all time. (It must be mix of best things from TLOU, DayZ, Days Gone, Resident Evil)."
Another added, "I'm inhaling pure copium right now but let me get this off my mind. Maybe, since we didn’t get cowboy zombies in the second Red Dead, we’ll get GTA VI zombies instead," and a third concluded, "This has been one of my dreams since RDR:UN. Mixing that gameplay with driving, a post-apocalyptic/empty GTA city, modern guns etc would be so good."
Of course, we've been burned before by GTA V. There are already concerns that the success of GTA Online and the temptation to keep flogging Shark Cards means we'll never get a narrative DLC again, although insiders have claimed we'll get multiple episodic releases about two years from the launch of the main game.
Like we were done dirty with GTA V's lack of DLCs, many feel Red Dead Redemption 2 did the same by not giving us an Undead Nightmare sequel. Oh well, if we ever get a new-gen Red Dead Redemption, at least we could give its Undead Nightmare a fresh lick of paint.
