Rockstar Games has announced that a Grand Theft Auto feature is being removed due to last-gen consoles no longer being able to keep up with newer features and updates. Players are understandably upset with the change, with many questioning why the decision was made.

Rockstar Editor is being removed from last-gen consoles

Rockstar has announced that Rockstar Editor will be removed from PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles on 20 February to ensure that GTA Online and GTA V will be able to continue to be updated on these platforms.

As well as the editor being removed, any clips and projects which were saved within the editor will also be deleted at the same time.

In a blog post shared to the Rockstar Games News site, it said: "As we begin to approach the limits of what's possible within the technical capacity of previous-generation consoles, we are taking necessary steps to allow for future GTA Online updates on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

"As part of these changes, the Rockstar Editor (including any Clips or Projects saved in the Rockstar Editor) will no longer be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles as of February 20, 2024.

"This update will help to ensure the stability of these platforms and keep them updated with GTA Online additions for as long as possible."

Though the blog post focuses on GTA Online, it seems as though GTA 5 will also be impacted by the removal of the Rockstar Editor.

The Rockstar Support page about the removal of the editor clarifies: "The Rockstar Editor will no longer be available in Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles as of February 20, 2024."

Rockstar has confirmed that the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S will not be impacted by these changes.

Last-gen players are disappointed to be losing Rockstar Editor

While not everyone will have used Rockstar Editor when playing, it is a very useful tool for anyone wishing to make movies or other similar projects within GTA. The tool allows players to record footage within GTA and easily edit and share the video.

Several players have made use of the editor's ability to add filters, music and text, control all 277 character models in director mode, as well as edit the video to create short films within the GTA Engine itself. Understandably, many players who made use of Rockstar Editor are disappointed to see it leaving older consoles.

"Stupid game companies always only care about money and never care about cheaters," one user wrote. A second Twitter user commented: "Will this change much? No. Take and remove unnecessary interiors (that have never been used), and start optimising normally. What will removing the video editor give you?"

Another user simply responded with several different crying emojis. Not everyone was as disappointed to see the editor go, however, with one writing “good riddance” and another Twitter user stating that "it was necessary."

The decision to remove features from the games as opposed to stopping support is an interesting one, which many players are questioning. This is especially surprising as the age of the consoles means that it is already a struggle to run the games to the standard that many people expect from GTA.

Rockstar has encouraged last-gen console users to visit the Support site in order to learn more and find out how to export any projects they have made in the Rockstar Editor.
