Halo fans cast doubt on new 343 Industries remake rumours

Following rumours that 343 Industries is working on a Halo: Combat Evolved, fans remain unconvinced by new claims that this is the start of a remake trilogy for the original three games.

While Master Chief was once the 'master' of the first-person shooter series, it's fair to say the Halo name isn't what it used to be. 343 Industries hyped 2021's Halo Infinite as the resurrection the franchise needed after a six-year gap between it and Halo 5: Guardians, but sadly, it wasn't the case.

We've heard about an Infinite sequel almost since it came out, but as 343 keeps its cards close to its chest, it's possible we're looking to the past before looking to the future. Although we recently covered the rumoured Halo: Combat Evolved remaster, it might not be the end of the story. 

343 Industries is potentially working on multiple remakes

According to X (formerly Twitter) account @TechnicalHalo, it's more than a Combat Evolved remaster, with 343 potentially working on a full-blown remake that would bring Halo into Unreal Engine 5. If this is the case, we expect a much bigger affair akin to 2023's Resident Evil 4 remake.

Although the account is unverified, there's a deluge of rumours. Even if we take it with a pinch of salt, the OP claims that 343 is in complete control of the franchise but is using contractors to outsource development. Given what happened to The Last of Part I on PC, that might set alarm bells ringing.

Instead of simply porting 2014's Halo: The Master Chief Collection to PlayStation 5, 343 has reportedly realised it can make some serious bank by releasing separate new-gen remakes of the first three games. Despite only being in the early stages of development, there are already promises of modernised gameplay like sprint and 'clamber.'

While this all sounds promising, it might not be all it's cracked up to be. There's sure to be disappointment that it's only the single-player campaigns set to be remade rather than multiplayer - but then again, that sounds like a whole ordeal in itself. Then there's the fact it all smells a bit fishy.

When the news popped up on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, gamers were quick to rubbish the whole thing. One wrote, "Halo with sprint and no multiplayer sounds like the least faithful thing ever lmao. These details are fake as hell unless 343 has really lost the plot."

Another barbed comment said, "'Faithful' is just a word 343 uses to try and trick fans into thinking 'Trust us, we aren't going to f**k it up this time' before they specifically go out of their way to fuck it up. They're 3-for-3 with bad games of doing this sh*t every time." A third sceptic concluded, "Without multiplayer. I actually hope they scrap this and I'm a PS5 player." 

The future of Halo remains unclear, and while we're on board with the idea of a Combat Evolved remake, we're not sure there's any truth to the above. To us, it all sounds like the fanciful dream of someone looking for clout online. Then again, we've been proved wrong before.
