It's been a surprising year for gaming, with underground titles like Palworld and Helldivers 2 stealing the limelight away from AAA releases like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Skull & Bones. While Xbox has been sitting pretty with Palworld, PlayStation is ruling the roost with Helldivers 2.

Still, there are questions about when these juggernauts could switch sides, with Xbox owners dying to know when the Green Team will get to stomp Terminids and take out Automatons. We've heard a lot about a mythical Xbox release for Helldivers 2, and now, a mysterious placeholder has sparked hopes of its imminent arrival.

Helldivers 2 placeholder sparks hope of Xbox release

As shared by notorious leaker Knoebel, there's a possible placeholder page for Helldivers 2 on Xbox. Whereas typing something like God of War or Ghost of Tsushima on the end of an Xbox tag URL will deliver a "Page Not Found" message, Helldivers 2 takes you through to an actual page.

Players have quickly run with this, suggesting that Microsoft is preparing to reveal Helldivers 2 on Xbox. Knoebel admits, "Not me saying anything, I just wonder why there is no 404," but that hasn't stopped the democracy hype train from rolling into town.

It didn't take long, but this rumour might've already had cold water thrown on it. Fellow leaker billbil-kun has pointed out you get the same result when searching for something like Uncharted (another first-party Sony game). While there might be a chance that Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox, it doesn't seem like this is our first tease.

Back in April, we reported that Sony was in talks to bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox, although there's been no movement on it yet. Elsewhere, players have been calling for the release amidst a dip in the Helldivers 2 player count. A look on SteamDB shows Helldivers 2 is on a downward trajectory, which is only set to continue as we gear up for Black Ops 6

Even though it's only natural to expect a player dropoff as the next big thing comes along, reinvigorating the Helldviers 2 community via Xbox would be a shrewd marketing move. Whether that be via a paid release like on PlayStation or Game Pass, there are plenty of options.

Despite weathering the storm of Helldivers 2's PSN requirements, Helldivers 2 is still plagued with issues. Things have gotten so bad that some are suggesting the devs hold off on releasing the long-rumoured Illuminate faction. With Helldivers 2 still waging its own war with itself, maybe now isn't the best time to release on another platform.
