Helldivers 2 has a structure that makes it perhaps the most exciting game in the world right now - and that’s pretty nice when you consider how much the game relies on teamwork.
Much like its bug-thwarting compatriot Deep Rock Galactic, Helldivers 2 works at its best when every player is on the same wavelength, and that not only applies to immediate gameplay but also in planning which planet to liberate and which objective to chase.
It’s a structure that has hugely benefitted the game, and players in equal measure. But those same fans aren’t sure what should come next.
Helldivers fans can’t get along over new objectives
Helldivers 2 players are struggling as a unit, which probably isn’t a good thing given just how much of the game hinges on teamwork. Players are trying to figure out as a team which objective to take on next, and they’re struggling against each other as some make an attempt to push for a charge fuelled by vengeance.
It has practically become a meme in the Helldivers community right now for players to dedicate to returning to Malevelon Creek once and for all, dedicating to the hard-headed roleplay of space soldiers looking to avenge their fallen comrades and take back the region for Super Earth once and for all. Others are pointing out, though, that the coordinated charge now planned via Reddit on March 16 simply won’t yield any real results.
“I've seen you all on the warpath liberating the foes of Super Earth for some time now,” reads one impassioned post. “Since graduating the academy, there was no better feeling than diving on the Terminids-infested planets and giving them a 2-for-1 special on cups of Libertea. However, as much as I enjoy watching bug bastards eat 500kg, I've been in the trenches of a different massacre... Malevelon Creek.”
Fans are concerned about the push on Malevelon Creek
The dedication of players is of course commendable, but other players have pointed out that in many ways, it’ll be a pointless exercise in revenge - something that, notably, isn’t really that great in the end.
Equally, VG247 has pointed out that the Vietnam War-esque rallying and references to Malevelon Creek as “Robot Vietnam” isn’t exactly tasteful when considering that the date of the expected push on the location syncs up with the 1968 My Lai Massacre in Vietnam that saw countless war crimes committed. It’s not exactly a fun coincidence if it is one at all.
Players seem to think that the push on the area is going to be fruitless - and it could be incredibly so if the Automatons catch onto their plans. We could be in for a catastrophic failure here, and liberty could be at stake.
