Three seasons and 24 episodes later, Henry Cavill is out from The Witcher. As the self-confessed Witcher encyclopedia, Cavill seemed like the perfect actor to play Geralt of Rivia and quickly settled into the role. His departure came as a shock to everyone, and while some still can't accept it, he's officially departed.
While Season 3 of The Witcher has been marred by middling reviews and a dip in viewership, droves tuned in to see Cavill's final hurrah. The Witcher Season 3 finale disappointed many, as Cavill's Geralt wandered into some fog - soon to be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in Season 4. However, it could've been completely different.
The Witcher Season 3 ending was nearly completely different
As reported by Redanian Intelligence, Cavill's time as Geralt nearly ended differently, with mentions of an alternate scene. The site heard a report back in Spring 2022, with the final scene supposedly being "Milva helping Geralt in need, while Cahir was watching them from afar."
Those who've watched the finale will know Cahir (Eamon Farren) doesn't appear here. We see Geralt, Jaskier (Joey Batey) and Milva (Meng'er Zhang) riding off into sunset after battling the Nilfgaardian soldiers. The implication is that the camera would've panned to Cahir to tease his role in Season 4.
Instead, we've not seen Cahir since he was with Ciri during Thanedd and took an elven squad. It's unclear why the Cahir cut was nixed, and we don't know whether he'll still have a part to play in Season 4, but it's definitely possible. Redanian Intelligence speculates it's due to it being too similar to the end of Blood Origin.
What will happen in The Witcher Season 4?
The reason The Witcher Season 3 ending gets such a bad rep is because many feel it didn't tie off Cavill's time. There was a brief battle, but other than that, it was a pretty underwhelming farewell. As for what's next, Executive Producer Tomek Bagiński told Radio Times we'll get a "meta" transition between actors.
It would've been easy to introduce Hemsworth here, but also, it makes sense that the writers are leaving his introduction to the Season 4 premiere. After all, there's a worrying trend of those vowing to boycott the series ahead of Season 4. Will you be tuning back in for The Witcher Season 4?
