Back in the day, would you believe, League of Legends wasn't the uncontested behemoth we recognise now. Once upon a time, there was a genuine competitor to the MOBA titan that we now see as the very peak of the genre - having its player base jostled and tempted by Heroes of Newerth.

There may well be an alternate universe in which Newerth bagged Fortnite collabs and bangers by K/DA, but in this one, it suffered a grisly fate, falling by the wayside and being engulfed by League of Legends'  incredible success. And now, the game has made its final departure.

Can You Still Play Heroes Of Newerth?

Heroes Of Newerth Is Officially Dead

The game that once stood a chance to take down LoL has now packed its bags up and has left for the door.

Heroes of Newerth has now officially shut down, with its website now reluctant to let players download the game and its homepage displaying a bold statement; "HON is now officially closed," it reads. "Thank you for playing!"

The game garnered a lot of fans over the years, but to be fair, there aren't many left to mourn its loss. Much of the Heroes player base migrated over to League of Legends or DOTA 2 years ago. Stil, we're left asking, why has this happened?

Why Did Heroes Of Newerth Die?

It's likely that the game tanked in players as a result of the ease of access in the rest of the market - Heroes of Newerth was a generally much more complex experience than its MOBA counterparts. Plus, a lot of people came to know the game for its immeasurably toxic fandom - which was something that the game's devs struggled to prevent.

The Heroes of Newerth community wasn't particularly nice to itself, and it reasonably pushed a lot of players away. Even so, it's sad that the game has come to shut down. It looks like a winner in the MOBA wars has been determined, with League of Legends sitting quite comfortably in a "league" of its own.
