In the competitive market of third-person shooters, it's kill or be killed. Unfortunately for Hi-Rez Studios' Rogue Company, it's just lost a limb as it's hitting the dirt on Nintendo Switch.
Launching in 2020 as the next big thing, Rogue Company was supposed to follow in the footsteps of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Although it had a strong launch and even lured in Warzone streamerDr Disrespect to create his own map, it soon dropped off a bit.
Hi-Rez is axing Rogue Company on Switch
In a world where Fortnite reigns supreme, Rogue Company has struggled to keep up. While Fortnite has a strong player base on the Switch, Hi-Rez hasn't been able to match that on Nintendo's plucky little handheld. Three years after it first hit the Switch running, Rogue Company is dead.
Posting a statement on April 11, Hi-Riz confirmed that although full support for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox will continue, the developer has "realized that the performance of our Switch port was not up to our standards, and we were unable to provide the level of support our players deserve."
The team continued, "This choice wasn’t made easily or without concern for our community...We understand the impact this decision may have on our community and would like to assure you that we have worked diligently to find workarounds for various Switch-specific issues in the past.
"Unfortunately, significant technical and process challenges prevent us from continuing support for this platform, and we believe this is the best choice for Rogue Company."
What's next for Rogue Company on Switch?
This seemingly abrupt axing means the in-game stores for Rogue Company on Switch have been closed, while eShop purchases are due to be turned off "as soon as possible." There's currently a 404 error on the Nintendo.com store.
Even though the death day isn't until June 20, Rogue Company is now in its twilight on Switch. Whether you'll stick with it until the bitter end of the bailout now, there are plenty of angry players.
Hi-Rez suggests you use your account to "pick up your progress where you left off on another platform," although it's not that easy for many. Considering Rogue Company didn't leave its open beta until May 2022, it wasn't exactly a long-lived adventure to rival the other shooters on Switch.
