With a catalogue of great games being made into films and TV series as of late (Uncharted, The Last of Us, and God of War to name a few), there has yet to be an action movie made from a similar background.
Previous rumours hinted that Henry Cavill could be set to feature in a Call of Duty story, despite links to roles in the Game of Thrones universe after The Witcher filming ends, but all notions of this have since gone quiet. However, a Hollywood director has now confessed an interest in a "Warzone movie"...
A Call of Duty: Warzone movie could be on the cards for a Hollywood director
Extraction 2 is the next massive action film to hit box office, as Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as gun-savvy Tyler Rake. The film has been heavily compared to FPS games and stories like John Wick combined with Call of Duty.
The film also features some pretty solid Warzone-like action scenes with an enclosing circle of gas, helicopter support, and even elevator campers. It definitely beats Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's idea for a live-action Call of Duty.
Although director Sam Hargrave has claimed that the battle royale wasn't used as inspiration for Extraction 2 or the first movie, he still thinks that the popular IP could make for a fantastic film.
Extraction 2 director admits a Warzone movie has 'potential'
In an interview with Dexerto, Hargrave said, "Anytime an IP exists that there's a huge fan base for and has a cinematic quality – like a Warzone-type thing – I think there's always potential there.
"You just have to find… what's the heart? What's the emotional hook that pulls people in and makes them want to engage for a 90-minute feature?" he added. There are already iconic characters formed within the Call of Duty universe, such as Captain Price, Ghost, and Soap, so start your fan casting.
If nabbing Hollywood hunks for a video game version of The Expendables wasn't enough, the campaign's deaths hit harder than a rock to the face. He hasn't said yes, but maybe Hargrave could be tempted into bring Task Force 141 into the dystopian battle royale realm and catch it all on camera.
