Horizon Forbidden West likes to occasionally ask the player to make a choice. Mostly, these choices are harmless as they do not affect the outcome of the plot. This choice carries quite serious ramifications for the people involved though, so for some help here is who to choose in The Gate of the Vanquished.

The series of events leading up to this fateful decision is quite a winding path. First of all, you need to head to the small village of Arrowhand. It is located south-east of Scalding Spear, and south-west of your base, roughly halfway between the two. In this small mountain village, you will meet Drakka. He is a Tenakth warrior who needs your help with some machines. Agree to help him to begin Thirst for the Hunt. Go with him and deal with the machines.
Upon returning, a Tenakth named Jetakka will approach Aloy for help. He asks that she head to Scalding Spear, where he will tell her more. The city is having trouble with its water supplies and Jetakka believes Aloy might be able to help. Reluctantly, Yarra agrees to let Aloy take a look at their water system. Follow the pipes up into the hills, find the source of the water and fix it to complete the quest. On the way back, Yarra identifies the dead soldier as one of Drakka’s men, surmising he had sabotaged the water supply.
Return to Scalding Spear to find that Drakka has been detained, and Yarra is holding him responsible for the water shortage. This leads to an altercation and Drakka challenges Yarra’s authority. This begins the quest The Gate of the Vanquished.

This leads us to the sidequest in question, where Aloy must make a choice. Drakka and Yarra are determined to fight it out to decide who will command the clan. This is when players are presented with the choice, side with Yarra or side with Drakka. Jetakka believes Aloy can intervene, and make both sides see sense.

Your choices are as follows:
- Side with Yarra
- Side with Drakka
- Both Need To Stand Down
If you have a preference, you can choose either to side with. What ensues is a battle where you must help your chosen side kill all on the other side. It is made clear that this fight will not end here, as those loyal to the opposite side will be rounded up and killed. Whoever you choose, a bloodbath will follow.

You can also choose to tell both that they need to stand down and talk this out. Unfortunately, this doesn’t go as well as you may hope. Neither is willing to concede that the other is anything less than the enemy, and must be killed. There is no way to stop the fighting, however by choosing this option you will reduce the massacre. Both agree that there is no need for others to die, so they will fight with only minimal help.
After choosing to talk them down, you will be presented with the binary choice. Either Drakka or Yarra, there is no other option. Choose who you feel is best to lead the desert clan, because the other will not survive.
Beyond this sidequest, your decision doesn’t matter too much. There isn’t much to do with the desert Tenakth beyond this. The only difference is that a later sidequest is given by the commander of the clan, who that will be depends on your choice here. The sidequest is the same regardless.
