Eagle-eyed Nintendo fans have noticed certain games are being marked as sold out on several websites.

This has sparked several rumours surrounding the games going out of print, reprinting games for the Nintendo Switch 2 or potentially the introduction of a new Nintendo Selects line.

Several Switch games have been running out of stock

A few Switch game fans, including the Twitter account Nintendeals, have started noticing that physical releases of certain Switch titles have been going out of print and are showing as out of stock at major retailers including Amazon, Target and Walmart.

The games, which have been compiled by Neoxon on ResetEra, include:

  • Paper Mario: The Origami King
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (2019)
  • Pikmin 3 Deluxe
  • Metroid Dread
  • Kirby Star Allies
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  • Fire Emblem: Engage
  • Yoshi’s Crafted World
  • WarioWare: Get it Together!
  • Nintendo Switch Sports
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Splatoon 2
  • Super Mario Maker 2
  • Mario Strikers: Battle League

Some of the titles on the list would definitely take people by surprise if Nintendo was to stop selling the game all together.

Namely, Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Maker 2 which are both still extremely popular, and Fire Emblem: Engage, which released less than a year ago.

There has not been any confirmation as to why these games are selling out, however this has not stopped people from hypothesising that it could be a hint towards something a lot more exciting than discontinuing games.

Opinions are split as to whether or not the titles hint towards a new console or a Nintendo Selects line

There are a few theories as to what the games running out of stock could mean, with the main two being the return of a Nintendo Selects line or a revamp of the games ahead of the Switch 2’s release.

One commenter wrote: “The fact Mario Odyssey and NSMBU are on here screams Nintendo Selects returning.”

Another commenter wrote: “I definitely feel like this is for Nintendo Selects. They tend to do it whenever a console is nearing the end of its lifespan.”

Conversely, some people firmly believe it is an indicator of the Switch 2 coming soon.

“Many of these don't make any sense,” wrote one Redditor. “That can only mean that the next system is coming sometime in the next 6 months. No more than that.”

Another said: “I’m guessing this means the switch 2 isn’t that far away…”

Regardless, it is likely that the games will remain on the digital store for a good while longer, so there is no pressure to go hunting down these games unless you want them in the physical form and exactly as they are now.

Worst case scenario, some of these games might be coming back with some rather ugly branding stickers on the cases in the near future, but we will have to wait and see as to whether something exciting comes out of the shortages.
