If Rockstar Games knows how to do one thing, it's how to play the long game. Whether it's leaving us dangling on news of Grand Theft Auto 6, doing a will-they-won't-they with Bully 2, or milking the GTA V cash cow until its teats are bloody, the acclaimed developer doesn't exactly keep us in the loop with what's going on behind closed doors.
While Rockstar had early success with the likes of Max Payne, Manhunt, and Midnight Club, it's now known for the might of GTA. That's not to put the Red Dead series down, but with GTA V being the most profitable entertainment product of all time, it's clear to see why Rockstar puts its efforts into San Andreas.
What Is The Big Rockstar Announcement?
Rockstar's last big release was Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online in 2019. We know there was Grove Street Games' maligned GTA Trilogy, but as we don't really count that one, it means we're overdue the reveal of something new.
According to noted Rockstar insider Chris Klippel, the developer is gearing up to announce a "new project". The mention of "new" has us thinking it won't be related to GTA 6, but remembering there hasn't been an official look at the much-hyped game in terms of protagonists, gameplay, or even a logo, the obvious reveal would be something related to this.
Others think it could be the long-rumoured new-gen remake of 2010's Red Dead Redemption. Take-Two is said to be shifting focus onto remakes, and with eight currently in the pipeline, we'd be shocked if one of them isn't Red Dead Redemption. We also recently reported about a possible RDR2 remake to join it. Klippel has an almost untarnished track record with this sort of thing, and with him saying "It can happen relatively quickly," the upcoming deluge of gaming showcases could be one to watch.
When Will GTA 6 Be Released?
The obvious question is about the GTA 6 release date and when it will come racing into view. Although Rockstar has promised development is "well underway," that's not exactly much help for those of us who've been waiting nine years (and counting) for GTA V's successor. Earlier this year, we speculated that GTA 6 would be announced in 2022 (tick) and could hit a 2024 release window thanks to Take-Two's financials. As well as all of that being subject to change, Take-Two hasn't made anything official.
Rockstar's new-gen juggernaut isn't even out yet and it's already breaking records. The GTA 6 announcement tweet is the most-liked gaming tweet of all time - racking up a whopping 601.9k likes. Sony confirming that the PS5 has been delayed comes in second (509.4k likes), while Splatoon 3 getting a release date is third (367k likes). Be warned that even if Rockstar's announcement isn't to do with GTA 6, we're on the cusp of many years of leaks, rumours, and debunks - and you thought it was bad before.
