"Do you expect me to talk Mr. Bond?" Well, when it comes to IO Interactive's Project 007, the developer has suddenly become pretty chatty about what we can expect. There have been some great Bond games over the years, and while we'll likely never reach the highs of GoldenEye 007, Project 007 is certainly trying.
Parker Brothers' James Bond 007 gets the honour of being the first ever game for the suave spy back in 1984, and all these decades later, the Hitman developer is hoping to put its mark on the franchise. As we're stuck between live-action eras of Bond, Project 007 can hopefully fill the gap.
Project 007 reveals which Bond you'll be playing as
In an interview with Gamereactor, Senior Technical Executive Producer Cris Vega gave us some insight into who we'll be playing as. "It's going to tell the story of the first Bond and how it becomes the secret agent that he is, but that's what we can comment on," said Vega.
This leaves us in the dark about what's going on with Project 007, seemingly leaning into the wild theory that James Bond is just a codename. It's a long-held fan theory that there's been more than one James Bond. Although there was continuity between the Connery and Moore years, the Daniel Craig era is less clear.
Then again, others have suggested that things might've been lost in translation. Just like 2008's Casino Royale told the story of James' first outing and how he got his 00 status, it's likely Project 007 will do the same. Whether we'll get the likeness of Craig or a new take on Bond, remains to be seen.
What else do we know about Project 007
Vega also confirmed Project 007 as an "online multiplayer RPG" but suggested "it's still some years until it will release." As for the idea of Xbox exclusivity, Vega said it will probably be on console and PC but added, "noting is confirmed." There's no news on whether PlayStation owners will be locked out.
After Activision and EA gave up on the Bond IP, Project 007 hopes to bring it back in style. We've seen Star Wars get a similar treatment with the likes of Respawn's Jedi games and Massive Entertainment's Star Wars Outlaws, while Indiana Jones is doing the same with Bethesda.
While there's no release date for Project 007 and no official title, it sounds like things are coming along nicely. If we're lucky, we'll get a unique story that harks back to the glory days of Nightfire and Everything or Nothing. It hopefully won't be as dire as Blood Stone.
