Fans have been looking forward to the potential of a multiplayer spin-off for The Last of Us for a long time. That's not because players have been asking for it, but because it's more because Naughty Dog has been promising it for a while.

Years have passed since the mode first arrived under the moniker of Factions, and as we saw a tiny peek at concept art for a more evolved iteration of the game at the reveal for The Last of Us Part I, it seems as though it's actually on its way this time around. Better yet, it looks like there won't be an entry fee for it either.

The Last of Us Factions Could Be Free-To-Play

A Reddit user shared their findings, which were apparently buried in a new job post at Naughty Dog. The details hidden inside definitely seem to imply that the upcoming Factions game could actually be free-to-play.

The job post is for a producer needed work on the company's live operations, which is expected to come from Naughty Dog as it prepares for a journey back into multiplayer. Something else seems to stick out because the job ad is looking for someone with "proven experience in a production role supporting a AAA, free-to-play, live title." Interesting.

So, it looks as though Naughty Dog is looking to take Factions to the masses, or that it's working on a different title entirely with the idea it'll go free-to-play. We're going to guess it's the former. Whatever is going on, this is new ground for Naughty Dog and it's pretty exciting.

When Is The Last Of Us Factions Predicted To Com Out?

We don't have a concrete release date for the game just yet, but fans have high hopes for the multiplayer title's arrival in the next year. This mythical Factions sequel is expected to appear in some capacity in 2023, and as it's apparently been in production for so long, fans are hoping it'll be early.

Knowing our luck though, we'll probably be waiting until late 2023 for the game to actually land. It's an ambitious undertaking to bring the world of The Last of Us to multiplayer on new-gen systems, but given Naughty Dog's incredible track record, we have full faith the acclaimed developer can pull it off.
