This time last year, G2 Esports fans were thrilled by the arrival of marquee signing Martin "Rekkles" Larson. He was pinched from their main rivals Fnatic and solidified what appeared to be a championship-challenging roster.

However, results didn't swing in favour of the highly-rated world beaters, and they were subsequently left scratching their heads after being denied a World Championship place by an angry Fnatic side.

Now, prior to the 2022 season getting underway, G2's long-time Jungler Marcin "Jankos" Jankowski has opened up to why he thinks the Rekkles signing didn't work out, and how it led to his step-down to the LFL with Karmine Corp.

Jankos Claims Rekkles Departure Was Due To Contrasting 'Ways Of Playing League of Legends'

Having seen Rekkles depart for a new challenge in the LFL, the top-flight G2 side soon replaced him, and two other departures with a trifecta of new talent in Sergen "Broken Blade" Çelik, Raphaël "Targamas" Crabbé, and Victor "Flakked" Lirola. Ahead of their first game, Jankos discussed how the two had a difference of opinion on how League of Legends should be played, which was a contributing factor to Rekkles' departure.

Speaking in an interview with Ashley Kang, the Jungler said, "I think me and Rekkles did get along as human beings and as teammates as well, to be perfectly honest, I think me and him had the different ideas of playing the game."

Why Did Jankos And Rekkles Differ In League Of Legends Playstyles?

Despite both players being leading talents in their respective roles in European League of Legends, if not the entire world, Jankos believes that their meta picks specifically didn't compliment each other in the way that they expected.

"It’s about meta champions," he continued, "[It's] about what to play and how to play, and how to play as a team. I feel like we had different conceptions and I think we tried our best to make it work, and I feel that was the case for different players too, it wasn’t only me and him."

Following Rekkles' departure, G2 Esports kicked off their campaign with back-to-back victories against Excel Esports and Astralis, before taking a loss to previous LEC champions MAD Lions. While things look promising for the established organisation, it's still a long way to go before reclaiming their former glory and finally getting their hands on an elusive Summoners Cup.
